Atomic Blonde

David Leitch 2017 United States 116min english s.-t.f.

In a summer overloaded with testosterone-driven action fare, two female action heroines, Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman and Charlize Theron's Lorraine Broughton, proved they could kick just as much ass as the men - and then some. The latter, the star of Atomic Blonde, finally provides the female 007 Hollywood has been promising for so many years, even giving it a sexy LGTBQ spin, with Theron's heroine happy to flirt with James McAvoy's dissolute spy, but more eager to hop in the sack with Sofia Boutella's femme fatale to the strains of eighties synth-pop hit, "The Politics of Dancing" by Re-Flex. Directed with flair by John Wick’s David Leitch, Atomic Blonde is a stylish retro neo-noir set in eighties East and West Berlin, jam-packed with jaw-dropping action, that cries out to be seen with a captive audience. It also proves that a film with LGTBQ themes can be just as commercial as anything else, and a positive step as far as big-screen representation goes. Of course, more than anything, it's just plain fun! – Chris Bumbray
