MY EMPTINESS AND I (MI VACIO Y YO)

ADRIAN SILVESTRE | SPAIN | 2022 | 108 MIN | SPANISH S.-T.EN.

“Love is in the air,” but… Raphäelle Perez, a French trans woman living in Barcelona, feels shut out. Between medical interrogations and dates that end badly even when men treat her as something more than “alien,” Raphi is desperate for belonging and willing to explore her limits to find it.

Thus begins Raphi’s journey of self-discovery, which will lead her from a diagnosis of gender dysphoria to a documentary theatre stage, learning from women of all kinds along the way, from her workout buddies and colleagues to the trans support group I-Vaginarium and an LGBT2SQ+ art “Collective.” Time and time again confronted by the question: when intimacy has become a commodities market, who and what counts as legitimate? A fiction follow-up to Adrián Silvestre’s hyper-observant hybrid doc Sediments, one of last year’s festival picks and featuring many of the same cast members, this Künstlerroman has an equally layered, probing approach, offering an unflinching portrayal of the body’s realities. Raphi must embrace the time and commitment needed for change in order to come to terms with the way the world perceives her and the woman she wants to be.
