GIRL PICTURE (TYTÖT TYTÖT TYTÖT)

ALLI HAAPASALO | FINLAND | 2022 | 100 MIN | FINISH S.-T.EN.

Dueling storylines of female friends, one gay, one straight – commitment-phobic Mimmi and climax-chaser Rönkkö – convey the tribulations of pleasure, both sexual and emotionally enduring. And the salve of a powerful hug-it-out bond that transcends every hiccup, humiliation, and failed orgasm.

As Rönkkö (Eleonoora Kauhanen) attends party after party, trawling for the man who can send her into the sexual stratosphere, Mimmi (Aamu Milonoff) has found a “supernova” in the form of a competitive figure skater as equally fierce and unpredictable as she is. Emma (Linnea Leino) fights for their love in a way that Mimmi’s distracted mother never does, yet a series of inexplicable choices underscore the psychic wounds that lie beneath Mimmi’s now happy veneer. With a satisfying story arc that brings together Mimmi and Rönkkö’s wayward lives and a Shazam-worthy soundtrack crowned by a club sequence set to Perfume Genius, Girl Picture puts female desire in the frame. Offering space for frank discussions between women who, in their own ways, are averse to the collisions of intimacy but are there to attend to one another’s bruises.
