Devastated by a quickly collapsing relationship, newcomer Moritz is taken in by the manifold delights of Berlin, a city which equally threatens to spit him back out. This nomadic journey from innocence to experience has Moritz hooking up, getting inked, and constantly evolving, his heart yearning for softer landings.
After Jonas (Gustav Schmidt) unceremoniously dumps him, the mercurial, art-loving Moritz (Lorenz Hochhuth) is left to wander apartments and party scenes, helped along by unexpected kindnesses he doesn’t always properly acknowledge. The naïve boy who arrives in Berlin to chase romance discovers drugs and the dubious pleasures of his “beautiful” transformation. Throughout his eventful 20s, friends and lovers drift out and unexpectedly back into his life and the lines of sex and friendship blur. In Drifter, writer-director Hannes Hirsch accumulates acute vignettes, capturing the flow of life as it is negotiated and all the little moments that – for better or worse – make us who we become.
