COP SECRET (LEYNILÖGGA)

HANNES ÞÓR HALLDÓRSSON | ICELAND | 2021 | 98 MIN | V.O. ISLANDAISE S.-T.A. / ICELANDIC S.-T.EN.

Cop Secret is the type of big-budget buddy cop spoof that LGBT2SQ+ audiences aren’t afforded, with the DNA of Die Hard and the zing of Austin Powers zaniness. When Reykjavik experiences an enigmatic crime spree, a closeted “supercop” and pansexual crime fighter unite to solve the case and ignite romance.

The film opens with a Bond-worthy chase scene, guitars soaring, introducing us to Icelandic reckloose Bússi (Auðunn Blöndal) and the “rich and handsome” Hörður (Egill Einarsson). They are rival cops in pursuit of a shadowy organization led by an unhinged villain (Björn Hlynur Haraldsson) with a taste for blood and a hoarse, often nonsensical Trumpian English. A brush of their hands during a shootout and many Jägermeister shots later, Bússi and Hörður team up (in more ways than one) to stop a deadly plot at a World Cup-qualifying women’s soccer match. Loyalties are tested and bad guys exploded in this endlessly entertaining romp from former professional soccer star Hannes Þór Halldórsson, who lovingly skewers the buddy cop genre, wringing it for humour, hard-hitting hijinks, and plenty of popcorn-popping homoeroticism.
