The Untold Tales of Armistead Maupin

Jennifer Kroot 2017 United States 90min english
Synopsis:

Few gay writers living today are as legendary as Tales of the City creator Armistead Maupin. Astute and effortlessly charming in person and in prose, Maupin has touched the lives of millions and helped mold his adopted city of San Francisco in the popular imagination, whether through his newspaper serial in the Pacific Sun and San Francisco Chronicle that became a series of beloved novels or the PBS miniseries based on them, which, among other things, featured the first gay kiss on scripted television. And that part of his resume only scratches the surface. What this illuminating documentary uncovers is the lesser told tale of how Maupin left his conservative, Southern roots to become the man who would one day sleep with and out Rock Hudson and befriend the likes of Sir Ian McKellen, Neil Gaiman, Laura Linney, and Margaret Cho, all of whom appear in the film and offer insight into this giant among giants. Open and forthcoming, Maupin adds to these voices with his own huge-hearted take, further revealing how, with wit and courage, he has spent his life giving those without a story a story. – Michael Belcher
