Signature Move

JENNIFER REEDER 2017 United States 80min english

What starts as a classic coming out tale set in the interweaving immigrant communities of Chicago finds new moves in this quirky charmer with a cast as diverse and plucky as its soundtrack. Zaynab (Fawzia Mirza) bumbles her way into the heart of the no-nonsense Alma (Sari Sanchez), an out and proud lesbian with a close-knit Mexican-American family who refuses to keep secrets. Meanwhile, Zaynab’s lonely, widowed mother (an affecting Shabana Azmi) refuses to leave her apartment, wandering the small flat like a ghost, hooked on Pakistani soap operas and empathizing with spiders she spies in her binoculars; safe in her ritualized existence. Zaynab’s immersion in the world of Lucha-style wrestling proves a catalyst for the coming together of these “new arrivals” and the purging of the existential specters of “immigration and codependency.” Signature Moves manages to be both a poignant exploration of mother-daughter relationships across cultures and an absurdist comedy with hints of Glow, sometimes within the same scene, and will leave you smiling at both the sweet and the silly. – Michael Belcher
