The Ring Thing

Will Sullivan 2017 United States 106min english

A mistaken proposal in Provincetown threatens to split New Yorkers Sarah (Sarah Wharton) and Kristen (Nicole Pursell) apart, and literally splits the film in half: one storyline pursuing the immediate implications of Sarah’s ambivalence towards getting married and the other following Kristen in a possible future where the pursuit of her vocational passion comes into conflict with the life she’s built with Sarah. The glue between these two scenarios is the documentary Sarah is making in the present with her filmmaking partner, Gary, who is struggling through a bitter divorce with his husband. Featuring real interviews with LGBTQ couples and divorcees, these segments investigate the logistics and emotional ramifications of same-sex marriage and divorce, as well as what it means to be complete – with or without a partner. As the interviews pile up and Sarah confronts the divorce of her parents when she was child and her abandonment issues, she searches for a conclusion for both her film and her matrimonial dilemma, and both Sarah and Kristen learn the vital role of questioning in any loving relationship. – Michael Belcher
