I Dream in Another Language (Sueño en otro idioma)

Ernesto Contreras 2017 Mexico 103min spanish s.-t.en

San Isidro, Mexico provides the moody backdrop to this elegy of loss, which drips with the mystery of its cloud forest locale. A young, dashing linguist and a girl who teaches English over the airwaves and dreams of leaving Mexico for the U.S. join forces, professionally and emotionally, to foster a dialogue between the last two remaining speakers of the Zikril language: her cantankerous and cold-hearted grandfather, Evaristo, and the kindly, lonely Isauro with whom he shares a shadowy past. As the clock winds down on Isauro’s life, the chance to save Zikril from obscurity comes up against the passions and repressions of a former age and the constraining dialects of religion and shame. The enigmatic Zikril tongue becomes a metaphor for the twist of affection and enmity only Isauro and Evaristo can fully comprehend, as well as “the enchantment” that may await them, if only they can find a way to speak the truth. Atmospheric and tinged with magical realism, I Dream in Another Language is the Contreras brothers’ exploration of language death and how sometimes, in life, we can be dead already. – Michael Belcher
