John L`Ecuyer What began as a simple request to attend the prom with his boyfriend turned into a media frenzy pitting the Church against the Canadian Charter of Human Rights, a community against a school board, and a family against its faith. In 2002, when Marc Hall challenged the Durham Catholic School board to reverse their decision, he didn’t realize his story would make news across the country, bring interview requests from as far away as Australia, and many television appearances. Prom Queen is a compelling dramatization of this tale of a courageous 17-year-old that attracted enormous community support and debate. The story has a happy ending, though it comes with a price for a family. With excellent performances by Aaron Ashmore (The Safety of Objects), Scott Thompson (Kids in the Hall), Marie Tifo (Les bons débarras, Père et fils) and Jean Pierre Bergeron (Sur le seuil, Omertá), Prom Queen brings to the big screen a story that had everybody talking – gay or straight, catholic or not. – KS
