Werner Hirsch Gesture after gesture, Kings and Disasters imitates the Mexican melodrama bought by the director for a dollar in a Spanish video store in Los Angeles. Although ripe with all the trappings of the genre – over-the-top emotional outpourings, violent confrontations, even murders – this retelling stars a bevy of handsome drag kings trying their best to do the piece justice. The result is a challenging, yet very funny masculine rearticulation of a classic heterosexual drama.
