Directors Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato (The Eyes of Tammy Faye, 101 Rent Boys, Party Monster) return to image+nation with this provocative documentary, which considers the long-entertained hypothesis that Adolf Hitler was gay. Politically inflammatory, this notion is supported by a number of clues: the Nazi leader’s intimate friendships with men, his near-chastity with women, his high-level dealings with powerful gays, his famous obsessions with art and opera and the persistence of gay rumours that began circulating even during his lifetime. The filmmakers sift this information judiciously, if with a palpable sense of wonder. Prompted by the writings of historian Lothar Machtan (himself the subject of much onscreen dispute) and featuring a wealth of interviews and archival clips, Hidden Führer is sure to fascinate. – SK
