Canada 2004 99min English o.v.

Wilby Wonderful is a story with heart, depth, and intelligence. From multi-talented homegrown writer/director/actor Daniel MacIvor (Beefcake, Take-Out, Until I Hear from You), comes a modern-day tale of tolerance, romance, and secrets in a small Maritime town. The closeted gay men on the idyllic small island of Wilby are in a tizzy! Someone is orchestrating a public gay-sex-in-the-woods-after-dark scandal that will "out" them by printing names in Wilby's town newspaper. Poor Dan, video store owner, thinks the only solution is to jump off the town bridge; however, he's thwarted in his attempt by Duck, a sign painter, who is so unnerved about the impending uproar he gets all the signs for the town's upcoming festival painted backwards. The joke is, most of Wilby's everyday residents are so wrapped up in their own lives they don't even notice the supposed hubbub! MacIvor's robust character ensemble features a spectacular cast A-list Canadian acting talent. There's Sandra Oh (Sideways, TV’s Grey’s Anatomy) as a social-climbing realtor; the great Maury Chaykin (Being Julia, image+nation 17’s hit, Sugar) as the golf-crazed town mayor; hunky Paul Gross (Due South) as the town cop; equally hunky Callum Keith Rennie (Hard Core Logo) as the painter; and singer-songwriter Rebecca Jenkins (Bye Bye Blues) as the town's sensual "bad girl" single mother, just to name the highlights. A sweet and wacky farce that also mines dramatic terrain, Wilby Wonderful won’t just make you smile it will also make you think. - Jaie Laplante / KS
