Stewart Main 50 Ways of Saying Fabulous is a poignant and highly entertaining coming-of-age story about how lives can be transformed by the power of love and friendship. Set in the long hot summer of 1975, 50 Ways of Saying Fabulous is the charming story of 12 year-old Billy, who is about to discover that growing up is a lot more confusing than he could have ever imagined. Billy (Andrew Paterson) is the kind of boy who just can't fit in. Instead of playing rugby, he spends his days imagining he's Lana, the heroine of his favourite TV show, Adventures in Space. His best friend – and cousin – Lou (Harriet Beattie), prefers to pretend she's the show's rugged hero, Brad. But just when the pair become acutely aware of how society might have a problem with these kind of fantasies, comes a hunky farmhand – who gets both of their eyes wandering and makes things complicated. As Billy learns about his sexuality, everything he knows is called into question, including his lifelong friendship with tomboy Lou, whose world is changing alongside his. Set in New Zealand’s stunning Central Otago landscape, 50 Ways of Saying Fabulous carries the audience along with Billy as he embarks on life as teenager. Director Stewart Main has created a film that is full of the anguish and pain of adolescence, without completely abandoning the beauty and importance of friendship. A film that will remind you of those awkward teen years while entertaining and warming your cynical adult heart.
