Eytan Fox, the acclaimed director of Yossi & Jagger returns to image+nation with his most complex and accomplished work to date. The Israeli secret service assigns Eyal, a deadly operative haunted by recent tragedy, to trace an aged Nazi fugitive through his adult grandchildren. One of them, a free spirit named Pia, is estranged from her conservative German parents and living on a kibbutz in Israel. When Pia’s gay brother Axel visits her from Berlin, Eyal poses as a tourist guide to glean information about their notorious grandfather. But political hardliner Eyal finds himself emotionally drawn to both siblings despite their progressive worldviews. The two men set out on an extended tour of the country during which, Axel’s frank and open attitude challenges Eyal’s rigid, clichéd values. Their friendship grows until he learns of Axel’s homosexuality, which is more than he can handle, and he flees. When the investigation suddenly leads back to Berlin, Walk on Water takes on the breathless trappings of an international thriller as Eyal’s deception is revealed and the vivid characters try to balance their thirst for justice with the limits of revenge. A film that aims to cross both social and cultural chasms, Walk on Water boldly articulates the central role that the past still plays in the lives of Israeli and German young people.
