Angelina Maccarone Director Angelina Maccarone (Everything Will Be Fine, image+nation 11) returns with Unveiled, a stunningly beautiful portrait of an Iranian refugee struggling between survival in small-town Germany and her love for a local woman. After fleeing Iran because she was in love with a woman, Fariba arrives in Germany as part of a group of refugees hoping to obtain political asylum. Her application is rejected. She cannot prove her life was in danger in her country. Fariba adopts the identity of her friend, Siamak, after he commits suicide while they are both in a transit camp. Dumped in a detention centre for refugees, she finds illegal work in a sauerkraut factory. While there, she meets Anne and begins to fall in love. Anne is also attracted to this man, who seems exempt from sexist behaviour. Their growing proximity and the escalating hostility of Anne’s entourage renders the clandestine nature of Fariba-Siamak more difficult to sustain in a context where one false move could be fatal. Striking cinematography and remarkable performances work together to tell a captivating story that reveals the struggles of refugees, the confines of gender and the power of love. This deeply moving, intimate yet universal film will stay with you long after the curtain closes.
