Un amour à taire A Love to Hide

France 2005 102min French o.v. English s-t.

It is Spring of 1942 and handsome Jean (Jérémie Renier, Les Amants criminels) and Philippe (Bruno Todeschini, Ceux qui m'aiment prendront le train) struggle as a gay couple in Vichy, France. Jean’s Jewish childhood friend, Sarah, finds refuge with the two – and a new identity – after her family has been massacred by the Gestapo. As these three balance their lives while working at Jean’s family-owned laundry, Jean’s rebellious brother Jacques appears. As he woos Sarah, who still bears a torch for Jean, Jacques throws the delicate balance of their furtive existence into chaos. Falsely accused of being a Nazi officer’s lover, Jean is sent off to a work camp and, ultimately, worse, his demise. Meanwhile, his family’s struggle to find him while surviving the war completes the film. A moving and gorgeously shot drama, Un Amour à taire masterfully brings to light the harsh challenges facing both Jews and homosexuals during the German occupation of France. A compelling film and brimming with some harsh history lessons, Un Amour à taire is a tale of love in a very difficult time.
