| That Man: Peter Berlin | |||
|
Jim Tushinski Jim Tushinski's hilarious yet moving documentary offers a step-by-step guide to becoming a minor celebrity amidst a sea of bandana and chequered-shirt clones. Sometime after Marilyn Monroe but before Madonna, Peter Berlin’s blonde, German immigrant ambitions take root in 70s San Francisco. A dilettante porn star, best known for Nights in Black Leather (1972) and That Boy (1976), Berlin parlays his distinctive Dutch boy haircut, lean physique and imposing appendage into local stardom. Hanging out (so to speak) with Sal Mineo and Andy Warhol, Berlin (apparently) avoided promiscuity, electing to remain an elusive, obscure and decidedly quirky object of desire who mysteriously vanished at the height of his popularity. As history imposed new styles and tastes, Berlin remained a faithful devotee of Narcissus and his own legendary lens. Tushinski engages in forthright and lively exchanges in his apartment-cum-shrine, fluffed up with astute and witty cameos from Armistead Maupin, porn director Wakefield Poole and John Waters (among others). Break out the aviator sunglasses, glitter and platform shoes as we return to a period when it wasn’t called homo-retro kitsch – yet! – BP
