In post-war Serbia, conflict is embodied by Sasa, a law student who plans to marry Stephan and move to Canada to escape her suffocating parents Lila and Milosh in Belgrade. A car accident overturns their plans as badly-injured Stephan is hospitalized. His sister Lana, a free-spirited photographer, arrives from Paris to comfort both Sasa and Stephan. A clandestine love evolves between Lana and Sasa – to Milosh’s complete dismay. A renowned judge – and a conservative, controlling, drug-addled father with a few secrets of his own, Milosh is determined to quash Sasa’s fledgling love. As one family disintegrates, another evolves as Sasa and her mother emerge from restrictive relationships. Dragan Marinkovi’s bleakly comic yet sexy psycho-thriller (complete with its own euro-trash soundtrack!) delves into a number of contemporary themes (addiction, intergenerational strife, lesbian trysts, loyalty, midlife crises) that accurately portray a society in transition. - BP
