Cassandra Nicolaou, who brought us such remarkable shorts as Interviews With my Next Girlfriend and Dance With Me finally gives us the feature debut we were waiting for with this taut tale that darkly addresses the ways in which we find family, love and inner peace. A weekend getaway turns into an all-Canadian nightmare as Sarah (Michele Nolden) finds herself held hostage in the weekly exodus from Toronto. En route to a wilderness retreat to celebrate her 10th anniversary with her partner Sam, Sarah is kidnapped by two lovers in a dangerous time, squeegee kids Jackson (Kett Turton) and Jenna (Katharine Isabelle, Gingersnaps). As their rocky relationship unravels, Jackson and Jenna form tentative alliances and uneasy truces with their captive luxury sedan owner, while plotting an escape-cum-extortion plan. A brittle and intelligent suspense movie, featuring hostile takeovers both corporate and personal, Sarah is pushed to decide whether she is among the “people who rescue” or the “people who need to be rescued”. A deft exploration of grief, memory and trust, Show Me is a jagged gem of a psychological thriller.
