Say Uncle

Peter Paige
États-Unis 2005 90min English o.v.

Peter Paige (the much-loved Emmitt from Queer as Folk) writes, directs and stars in this bold and daring black comedy about a man accused of child molestation. Paul (Paige) is a gay artist who sees the world more like a child than an adult. When his godson and favourite playmate Morgan moves to Japan, Paul falls into a deep depression. To alleviate his sadness he decides to find other ways to have children in his life: he gets a job at a toy store, tries to get babysitting gigs and goes to the playground regularly to hang with the kids. When his activities draw the suspicions of neighbourhood busybody, Maggie (played brilliantly by Kathy Najimy, Veronica’s Closet, Sister Act) who decides he must be a pedophile, a movement to vilify him spreads throughout the close-knit suburban community. Ultimately a film about our intolerance to difference, Say Uncle mixes humour with social critique to skewer both modern day paranoia and the hypocrisy of mass hysteria. Alternately disturbing and laugh-out-loud hilarious, Paige has created a frighteningly topical debut feature that is both highly entertaining and deeply affecting. – KS
