Pawel Pawlikowski A fairy-tale like award winning feature, My Summer of Love artfully captures the intense, fleeting relationship between two lonely teenage girls. Mona is a 16-year-old working-class girl from a small Yorkshire town living with her born-again brother. Mona’s lively spirit is the antithesis to Tamsin, a cultured, upper-class girl home from boarding school for the summer. Tamsin is a tragic, flamboyant, and worldly creature – quoting Nietzsche and mournfully moping to Edith Piaf. After meeting by chance one day, the two circle each other, first in an awkward but enthusiastic friendship, then more and more intensely, to which Mona’s brother objects. They become inseparable, exploring their sexuality, getting drunk and pledging their undying love for each other. As the pair’s togetherness teeters on the edge, a tragic resolution seems inevitable. Weaving a story of the promise of adolescent love without the nostalgia, My Summer of Love combines gorgeous cinematography, outstanding performances and a spectacular script to produce a film about first love that is not afraid to reveal the all too often dark side of young desire.
