Onir Director Onir’s stunning debut film set in scenic Goa chronicles this rise and fall – and rise again – of debonair, handsome swim star Nikhil (Sanjay Suri). After testing positive for HIV, Nikhil finds himself abandoned by his once-doting parents. As Nikhil gets fired, arrested and incarcerated in a filthy, rat-infested sanatorium‚ only his fiercely independent sister Anu (Juhi Chawla), her faithful fiancé Sam (Gautam Kapoor), Anjali (Shweta Kwatra) and same sex partner Nigel continue to fight for and support him. Nikhil’s story is related through flashbacks by those closest to him. Another jewel from India’s New Wave cinema, My Brother Nikhil is the second film about AIDS, and the very first to depict openly gay relationships. Based loosely on a real Goan swimmer, this film masterfully tackles the discrimination and ostracism faced by HIV-positive individuals and their loved ones, as India begins to confront social issues related to diverse sexual orientations. A heartbreaking yet inspiring film, My Brother Nikhil encourages us to reflect on and question our own attitudes in an age of AIDS apathy.
