Solitary and unmotivated, Steff dreams of launching his own woodworking business. It is the only thing for which he shows some enthusiasm. When Martin Hilder, aka Hilde, Steff’s ex-lover, dies of complications from AIDS, Steff is the sole beneficiary and thinks his business plans are possible. Hilde’s last wish was for his ashes to be strewn on the sea in Bretagne. Disregarding these wishes, Steff agrees to obtain the urn and give it over to Hilde’s mother in exchange for the money he needs. Everything is going smoothly until the appearance of Rex, Hilde’s last lover. He is hell-bent on fulfilling Hilde’s last wishes. Using the form of a road movie, the film intelligently depicts the dilemma between personal desires and respect for the memory of a lost friend. Hildes Reise is a beautiful film that weaves themes of integrity, the formidable pull of love and the clarity of vision required to make decisions.
