A daring and direct portrait of the lives of gay, lesbian and transsexual people in Turkey, Halbes Leben addresses the lived realities of five courageous bisexual, gay, lesbian and transsexual Turks. A colourful and dynamic mélange of the East and West, Turkey has a largely Muslim population under a secular government. Although LGBT people are not officially prosecuted, laws about public morality and order constitute a pretext for arrest, detention and harassment. Narrated by a bisexual man, two gay men, a lesbian and a transsexual woman, Halbes Leben is a privileged and rare glimpse into life in Turkey, particularly the relatively open and tolerant Istanbul. As Turkey carefully negotiates its entry into the European Union, a fledgling LGBT movement draws inspiration from both movements based in Europe, and its own cultural and social history of homosexuality since Ottoman times – and beyond. – BP
