Formula 17 is a delightful fantasy set in Taipei’s hopping world of gay clubs, queer energy and cute boys looking for love. New kid in town, Tien steps wide-eyed into this heady milieu looking for a summer of love and adventure. On his very first night in Taipei, he locks eyes with the irresistible and irredeemable Bai, rumoured to be the biggest playboy in town. Tien’s three friends – bartender Yu, flamboyant CC, and fitness fanatic Alan – are worried about Tien’s growing interest in Bai and warn him off with an exaggerated tale of Bai’s scandalous past, in which the heartbroken became a heartbreaker. Can the lopsided match succeed? Director D.J. Chen answers that question with great dollops of hokum and constant stimulation, creating a totally indulgent, boys-only, gay-only world full of sissies and hunks, sillier and sweeter than Candyland. Also an insistent testament to gay friendship, Formula 17 is an optimistic and wonderfully entertaining film about first loves and dear friends.
