Fag Hags: Women Who Love Gay Men

Justine Pimlott
Canada 2005 52min English o.v.

Fag Hags is a documentary about the unique bonds between women and gay men. Ranging from platonic friendship to romance to unrequited love, the film profiles three couples in the midst of their queer love stories. Fag Hags also looks at a new generation of women who are reclaiming these two derogatory words as a badge of honour, much like the queen of self-proclaimed fag hags, Margaret Cho. At one time a relationship either caricatured or shrouded in shameful secrecy, Fag Hags have finally come out of the closet and now they’re popping up in magazines, books, movies and television. Woven throughout Pimlott’s exploration is the evolution of pop culture representations – from the campy “sick and twisted” Elizabeth Taylor in Suddenly Last Summer to half the cast of Will & Grace. Funny, irreverent and poignant, Fag Hags celebrates the pure joy of platonic love, the surprise of attraction and the pain of unrequited desire, uncovering the complexity that has always existed between women and gay men. – KS
