Crustacés et coquillages

Olivier Jacques Ducastel, Martineau
France 2005 91min French o.v.

Festival favourites Jacques Martineau and Olivier Ducastel’s (Ma vraie vie à Rouen, image+nation 16) latest creation is a light, refreshingly funny, sexy and summery comedy. Marc and Beatrix (Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi, Ceux qui m’aiment prendront le train) and their teenage children Laura and Charly shack up in a rustic house by the Mediterranean Côte d’Azur. The seaside air seems to have a hormonal effect on the family and a few of their visitors: the shower becomes a masturbation chamber, while Charly and his equally adorable pal – or could it be boyfriend? – Martin seem to be up to something. When not pondering her son’s sexuality, Beatrix sneaks out for her own lusty rendezvous with a secret lover, Matthieu. And as for poor Marc? Well, he’s got a naughty secret of his own. Add a hunky plumber, a cruising trail, and lots of aphrodisiac-loaded mollusks and you’ve got a summer to remember. From PIGLFF faves comes this truly delicious screwball comedy with a couple of musical numbers thrown in for good measure. Believe us, you’ll never think of family “outings” the same way again! – LF
