Sathyan Ramesh Part road movie, part chick flick and a little bit like a German L Word, Beautiful Women tells the tale of five actresses who meet at an audition and discover that none of them actually wants to be in the film. Instead of going through with the futile audition, they embark on a single-day journey, chock-full of drinking and persistent questioning that eventually uncovers personal secrets: a hidden pregnancy, a faltering lesbian relationship, a failed career, and even an unforeseen connection between two of the women that threatens to jeopardize everything. Definitely not your run-of-the-mill dyke drama, Beautiful Women does not offer up any fanciful illusions nor does it abandon its characters in despair. Instead, Ramesh uses five uniquely beautiful women to reflect and illustrate the precarious balance between hope and longing that challenges all of us in the quest for fulfilment.
