Dottie's Magic Pockets is the first kids’ show that represents LGBT families – beyond that, it’s Super-riffic fun for everyone! Using catchy songs and cute animations, lesbian mom Dottie leads her friends as they sing and laugh and learn how to help each other through some unusual adventures! James the Flower, Randal the Beaver, Motilda the Mouse, and Uncanny the Singing Can are just a few of the lovable characters in this program that Curve Magazine calls “a hip and zippy show that overflows with imagination...” Dottie’s Magic Pockets also includes cartoons that represent gay families – such as purplish-pink Princess and her two Dads – as well as visits with real-life queer families. Described as “Sesame Street with a glittery nod to PeeWee,” each episode is a fun-filled, educational journey exploring social, intellectual, musical, and emotional development. [-]

A Manolo without (sadly) Manolos, adoptee Bethesda exchanges Maryland for an artists’ commune in San Francisco. An American-Filipina performance artist in search of her bio mom, Bethesda cruises bars gay and straight for appropriate performance venues with her merry band of mincing Mission District Mavens. Assured that her autobiographical one-woman show on the Castro will jumpstart her superstardom, Bethesda comes across an intriguing photograph of a familiar-looking woman, and a baby with a particular scar… Fag-Hags! One-night stands! Versatile bottoms! image+nation deliriously welcomes multi-hyphenate genius HP (Colma: The Musical) Mendoza’s sophomore “fag-u-lous, fantastic and fierce” musical, with open arms and limp wrists. A lower-rent Rent, with Cher-inspired Ikea sets, an ingénue cast and vibrant cinematography, Fruit Fly was fired straight from the queer musical cannon. A perky, polished and post-cool operetta with a killer soundtrack and witty lyrics for generation GHB, Mendoza himself describes it as “Richard Simmons meets Sulu.” If you and your fag-hag have to settle on only one film, please make it Fruit Fly! Stop children, what’s that sound? Everybody look, Ferron’s back in town! AWOL for a decade from her adoring fan base, Ferron reunites with her beloved band mates for an intimate, moving concert in Victoria, British Columbia. A lesbian Bob Dylan, Ferron wrote the songs that make the young dykes cry, including “Girl on a Road,” “Shadows on a Dime,” and “Testimony” – influencing a generation of alterna-folk singers, including Ani DiFranco and The Indigo Girls. Fiercely funny Ferron is winsome, wise and wry, whether she’s discussing her tortured past or her misadventures with Warner Brothers – among her other partners. Using a visual approach that echoes Ferron’s own pared-down arrangements, acclaimed filmmaker Gerry Rogers (My Left Breast) delivers an unplugged portrait of a Canadian folk icon. In a world devoid of positive representations of our age-fabulous LGBT revolutionaries, Ferron’s soft-butch stylings are poised to seduce anew many of our sisters in the struggle across generational divides. Every Friday night Shirley Hirsch (Laine Kazan) invites another “perfect” candidate for Sabbath dinner in hopes that her son Nelson (John Lloyd Young) will marry a nice Jewish girl. When Shirley and her husband Martin (Saul Rubinek) once again set him up on a date, Nelson reveals he is already seeing someone. In a maternal effort to find out who has stolen her son’s heart, she stops by his apartment unannounced and is greeted by Angelo (Jai Rodriguez), Nelson’s live-in boyfriend. Keeping things in the closet, Angelo introduces himself as Nelson’s decorator. Shirley also meets Nelson’s gorgeous neighbour and Playpen magazine centerfold, Sybil (Carmen Electra), who she naturally mistakes for Nelson’s mysterious girlfriend. Though concerned that Sybil isn’t Jewish, if her son is happy, she’s happy and she plans to introduce her to the family at an upcoming wedding. But instead, it’s Angelo they meet, and halfway through the ceremony Nelson comes out to his parents, prompting conniptions and barn-door-broad efforts at acceptance on the part of his parents. In the end however, love prevails in this romantic comedy about how far we have come and yet how far we still have to go. A roster of superb actors, including Vincent Pastore and the hilarious Bruce Vilanch make Oy Vey! My Son Is Gay! one film you can definitely bring mom to. [-]

NEW WAVE_ YOUNG QUÉBECOIS LGBT VOICES The past few years have seen the birth of a whole new generation of Québecois LGBT filmmakers whose voices reflect not only the particularities of LGBT existence in Québec but also the perspectives and stand points that speak of and to a contemporary take on being LGBT in the 21st century. Québec culture is born of a very specific francophone history - like all francophone diaspora cultures are - and the point of this gathering of voices is to explore the elements that make these cultural productions so very different from French production, for example. Québec, while having its very own history and culture, has also evolved within a North American culture context, thus there are not only English Canadian influences at work, but also American influences. What we have witnessed over the past few years, however, is the growth of a specific language and the telling of a very different and specific story. This is the premise from which we want to explore in this discussion. This masterclass / panel invites five young filmmakers whose works have been screened locally and internationally to come together to explore - among other topics - the notion of the exportation of their cinematic experience as Québecois LGBT filmmakers. An interactive event, audience participation is both welcomed and encouraged. Invited guests include: Anne De Léan, Rewind Jasmine Gervais, Son of the Preacher Etienne Désrossier, Miroir d’éte Olivier Lessard, Ceci n’est pas une dragqueen Dominic Goyer, Une robe blanche [-]

From the elegant symbolism of the empty flatbed concluding Sao Paulo’s mammoth pride parade, to Moscow Pride organizer Nikolai Alekseev’s Byzantine ingenuity and dogged determination, Beyond Gay – The Politics of Pride is a moving portrait of international LGBT struggles for human rights. Vancouver Pride Marshal Big Gay Ken (Coolen) explains the difference between marches and parades, and the importance of confronting the “authorities in your own communities,” as he visits countries where attempting to stage pride festivities invites extreme reactions. First-time director Bob Christie teams up with Aerlyn Weissman (Forbidden Love) in this panoramic meditation on the state of our queer nations. A refreshing and clearly Canadian perspective on LGBT rights at home and abroad, it features generous footage of local Pride events, and interviews with an international roster of LGBT human rights heroes. As with last year’s Gai… et après, Beyond Gay reflects an emerging trend in which our listless and stagnant celebrations return to their fiercely flamboyant roots – by expressing an international solidarity with oppressed LGBT people everywhere. As Tomasz Baczkowski, President of Warsaw Equality Pride eloquently states, “if it’s a movement, a pride movement… then we should move something.” [-]

If this film were an episode of Survivor, its motto would be “Outbitch. Outsnitch. Outwitch.” The ho’ in WeHo, Tiffani (Eating Out holdover Rebekah Kochan) coaches man-hunting acolyte Casey (Daniel Skelton) on the finer points of the fake online profile. Before you can shout “six out gay actors,” Casey is using Tiffani’s ex-boyfriend Ryan’s photograph to lure soulful Zack (Chris Salvatore) to him. However, the best-laid lies go awry when Ryan unexpectedly reappears... A buffet of crispy, deep-fried hunks, served in nutty sauce reflects new trends in tastelessness – Eating Out 3: All You Can Eat offers a main course of low-cal, piquant silliness that will affront, amuse and arouse you – simultaneously! Glenn Gaylord (obviously) directs this instalment of the first queer three-quel, co-written by Q. Allan Brocka (Boy Culture, Rick and Steve), in which Kochan is the only survivor, and stars John Waters stalwart Mink Stole. Pint-sized powerhouse Leslie Jordan’s (Will & Grace) restrained performance tempers this high-sodium guilty pleasure. [-]

The Summer of Love produced many cultural touchstones, not the least of which was the Toronto-based collective General Idea, who would take the international art world by storm. In her documentary portrait, Mangaard looks back on the lives and works of this trio of gay artists who, after forming in 1969, became synonymous with contemporary Canadian art and the beginnings of queer culture as it exists today. Producing art that mimicked the media, commercialism, and the art world itself, General Idea’s Jorge Zontal, AA Bronson and Felix Partz worked in every form imaginable, quickly reaching art star status with major shows in Paris, Berlin and Amsterdam. It wasn’t until the 80s, however, with the AIDS pandemic reaching full force that General Idea would produce their most iconic and recognizable work. With the tragedies of HIV/AIDS taking over, General Idea was torn apart by devastating losses. Turning to AA Bronson – the sole surviving member of General Idea – to reflect on the lives and influence of the collective, Mangaard’s film honours some of the most pioneering, boundary-pushing artists of our era. A surreal cityscape sets the background for this search for enduring love. As bathrooms morph into backrooms, handsome, virile young men connect with partners of both sexes. A loving Ryo encounters the sensitive Kieri, unleashing an enduring and erotically charged passion between them. Consumed with jealousy, long-suffering Tari, a denizen of deserted spaces, abducts Ryo. A determined Kieri scours the bathrooms and mountaintops for Ryo, undertaking an arduous journey which may require the ultimate sacrifice for love. As the film moves from amazing black-and-white to soft colour, it appears that all is not lost… Julián Hernández (Broken Sky) concludes his heavenly trilogy with his second Teddy-award winning effort, noted for its technical excellence. His focused and patient direction is ably supported by an inventive soundtrack, exquisite real-time colour correction, and striking imagery. A thoughtful mix of the modern and the mythological, Rabioso Sol, Rabioso Cielo reincarnates classics like Orpheus and Eurydice and Popol Vuh for LGBT people, hitherto hidden from history – and mythology.
