Hélas, le pauvre ‘tit Jérôme (Eric Debets) Beaunez… he’s hung-up on Henri, his unworthy twink ex-boyfriend. Bedevilled by the prospect of a Christmas alone, he exchanges the City of Lights for the City of Angels. Jérôme’s resemblance to Adrian Brody and friendly insouciance garner new admirers, among them a bevy of taco belles and a sultry stoner (Chad-Donald Strachey-Allen) – on his first day! As ill-fated daytime casting calls melt into sauna nights, Jérôme, never ready for his close-up, ends up starring in a pizza commercial. Despite the attentions of beautiful strangers, Jérôme continues to be haunted by Henri…
Jason Bushman’s fag-u-lous first feature comedy is about competing forms of isolation and self-absorption in car-crazed Los Angeles. Debets reprises his role as the serene (screen) hunter with gorgeous gams. Bushman deftly reveals the seamy underside of Tinseltown with a sun-bleached palette, in this hilarious, low-key illumination of issues that usually get lost in translation. [-]

11 year-old Aaron plays a game of Hide and Seek in which his friend Tony is never found. The mystery of their relationship – and of their queer attachment to the armoire in Aaron's bedroom – can only be revealed, it turns out, through hypnosis. At once a comedy, a mystery and a melodrama, Jamie Travis’ The Armoire is the resounding finale to his Saddest Children in the World trilogy. [-]

Nerdy and nervous Nathan (Stephan Bender, Superman Returns) goes where he’s taken, because his hard-drinking, hard-hitting father is unable to keep steady work. That’s pretty much how it’s been for most of his young life in rural Louisiana. He encounters the school bus driver, rough-and-ready Roy (Maximillian Roeg, 7th Heaven) – and their attraction is instantaneous. As they become study buddies, Roy’s protectiveness of Nathan arouses the suspicions of the boorish, brutal Burke. A hike into an uncharted wood takes this conventional coming-of-age story down a surprising but ultimately satisfying trail.
James Bolton (Eban and Charley) returns to familiar territory in this lush adaptation of Jim Grimsley’s award-wining novel, Dream Boy. The delicate uncertainty of Nathan and Roy’s predicaments is charged by Bender and Roeg’s easy, fresh eroticism and precocious performances. Rock legend Rickie Lee Jones is perfect as Roy’s mother. Bolton’s firm direction prevents Richard Buckner’s rich but omnipresent score from overtaking things. As with Pornography, a supernatural touch infuses this powerful film about first love and forgiveness. [-]

Time is running out, and Lola (Ashleigh Sumner) has only one chance to salvage a job and save her relationship with new girlfriend, Casey (Jill Bennett). Wait, make that three chances. With the fast-paced, colourful, fragmented style of the epic German film Run Lola Run, this time-bending tale chronicles the tempestuous journey of a commitment phobic photographer, Lola. Typically immune to the lesbian ways of the U-Haul, Lola discovers that she might have finally found someone worth slowing down for. But not now. Now Lola is late. Lola has to run! Navigating San Francisco like a treacherous video game, Lola has mere minutes to tame the domineering meter maid, avoid the canine-wielding park chick, grab the photos, sidestep the ex, and deliver the proofs to the bar where girlfriend Casey is meeting with a prospective client (and her ex), the euro-hottie Danielle (Cathy DeBuono). With an exhilarating climax and pumping pop/rock lesbian soundtrack, And Then Came Lola is the fun-filled lesbian mad dash rom-com of 2009! [-]

What if God were one of us? God is gay (sorry, sisters!) and loves martinis and musicals – and Her Righteously Outrageous Tapping and Twirling angelic Corps. Art imitates life as Eddie and Paul rehearse for their 15 minutes of off-Broadway infamy. Eddie (Joey Dudding) is tormented by his homosexuality, and the prospect of coming out to his devout parents. Paul (Daniel Robinson), a lesbian at heart, is poised to start whoring things up. Atheist or not, you’ll renew your faith in buff things with Big Packages before the strains of the torchy hit, “I Wanna Be a Slut” fade into fabulousness.
Finally! A musical version of Genesis for those with a religious bent – or just bent (religiously). Caspar Andreas (Slutty Summer) and Fred M. Caruso (A Four Letter Word) reunite to tease the bejesus outta us. A pre-Dion, post-Sondheim version of Slutty Summer, we’ll cry, we’ll laugh, we’ll fall on our knees and praise God and image+nation for not one, but two musicals this year! [-]

As Miles (Tad Coughenour) and their autistic son Billy prepare for a Seattle vaycay, Everett (Brendan Bradley) reluctantly realizes they have come to the end of love. A devoted family man, Everett’s brooding is interrupted by the arrival of Chase (Michael Montgomery, also starring in Pornography), who like Everett, is seeking direction. A cautious and self-conscious courtship develops against their mutual magnetism – but Chase gives chase and new love takes root in old-growth forests...
Filmed in the gay resort town of Guerneville, fans of David Lewis (Rock Haven) will recognize his attentive framing, mature themes and National Geographic scenery. Bradley’s appealingly awkward demeanour and chiselled boy-next-door looks combined with Montgomery’s sensitive machismo ignite the screen with a compelling if curious chemistry. The result is a rounded and tender account of the hard decisions that come with true love. [-]

Based on their award-winning short film, writer David Brind and director Adam Salky’s stunning debut feature poetically captures the confusion, longing, thrill and lust of teenage life.
Dare opens with Alexa (Emmy Rossum), a beautiful, studious, aspiring thespian whose dreams are shattered when acclaimed actor Grant Matson (Alan Cumming) tells her that she has brains but no edge. This devastating blow motivates Alexa to shed her good-girl image. She ditches her best friend Ben (Ashley Springer) – a closeted, melancholy outsider – slips into a hot miniskirt and seduces the gorgeous and popular – but troubled – Johnny Drake (Zach Gilford, Friday Night Lights). No sooner do they become an item that Ben decides he wants a piece of the action and kisses Johnny. This sets off a chain of events that creates a tangled web of intimacy between Alexa, Ben, and Johnny. As their lives slowly converge, it becomes ever more apparent that they have little to rebel against other than their own, self-imposed inhibitions.
The stellar performances from the three young leads are bolstered by the comic genius of Ana Gasteyer, Alan Cumming and Sandra Bernhard in this sharp and sophisticated genre-busting feature. [-]

Ander lives in the shadows; of the Arratia Valley, of Basque and familial traditions, of himself. A forty-something factory worker and farmer, he seeks consolation in solitude: From his mother’s despair over his bachelorhood, his sister Arantxa’s impending nuptials and his pathologically heterosexual pals. A nasty accident leaves Ander incapacitated temporarily, forcing both siblings to defy their inflexible mother – and hire José, a young Peruvian immigrant. Ander battles his disquieting attraction to José, between romps with Reme, a single mother and prostitute. On the eve of José’s imminent departure, Ander is challenged to embrace others – or risk losing himself and everything he loves.
A cinematic event, Ander is the first Basque-language gay film ever made. Ander was produced by the Basque Government’s innovative Berdindu (literally “to make equal”) – a programme that promotes and supports Basque LGBT cultures, identities and rights. Ander, like Donne-moi la main and Soundless Wind Chime, continues exploring the theme of queer redemption and revelation in rural settings. Director-writer Roberto Castón’s dazzling debut celebrates a romance as raw and rugged as the Basque homeland. [-]

Benign fathers! Cruella DeVil! Lesbian Muslims! As with Nina’s Heavenly Delights, nothing says lesbian like a runaway bride with a hat trick of shattered hearts behind her. Pampered and privileged businesswoman Tala (Lisa Ray), a London-based Palestinian Christian from Jordan, meets aspiring author, British Leyla (Sheetal Seth). As opposites attract, feisty Leyla finds herself forced to come out – but will fashionable and forthright Tala follow suit, or remain fenced in by cultural and familial pressures? Best friend Ali and Leyla’s wisecracking sister Zara plot to break her out from her couture-crammed closet in the name of love… Don’t miss the incredible adventures of two high-femmes in kitten heels, behti!
Shamim Sarif (The World Unseen) gives Oscar Wilde’s An Ideal Husband an L-Word makeover. Another desi-dyke dramedy replete with eye-catching and eye-rolling stereotypes, it breezes through contemporary issues, with giddy gay-girl goodness and a pat script. Lesbians will love ex-Montrealer (and husband of the housekeeper, EastEnders’ Nina Wadia) and Raiomond Mirza’s engaging soundtrack, which includes tangy hits by Lebanese superstar Nadine Khouri and Natacha Atlas. A short animé sequence swiftly captures the dynamic between handsome twins Antoine (Alexander Carril) and Quentin (Victor Carril), ushering in their sensual journey towards maturity. Antoine and Quentin are hitchhiking to Spain to attend the funeral of a mother they barely knew – without their father’s knowledge. As the brothers take turns being each other’s keeper, differences slowly emerge through their assorted erotic encounters and misadventures. However, it’s Quentin’s tryst with Hakim the hunky hay-baler that ignites residual resentments in Antoine, inciting him to play a spiteful trick on Quentin – who disappears subsequently, leaving Antoine guilt-ridden and miserable…
Pascal-Alex Vincent’s arresting exposé of the simmering tensions inherent to sibling relationships hangs easily off the Carril brothers’ cheekbones and restrained characterizations. A lean script leavened by thoughtful framing, and a haunting post-rock soundtrack by German duo Tarwater, complete this moving portrait of brothers struggling to become themselves. [-]

James the Flower, Randal the Beaver, Motilda the Mouse, and Uncanny the Singing Can are just a few of the lovable characters in this program that Curve Magazine calls “a hip and zippy show that overflows with imagination...” Dottie’s Magic Pockets also includes cartoons that represent gay families – such as purplish-pink Princess and her two Dads – as well as visits with real-life queer families. Stop children, what’s that sound? Everybody look, Ferron’s back in town! AWOL for a decade from her adoring fan base, Ferron reunites with her beloved band mates for an intimate, moving concert in Victoria, British Columbia.
A lesbian Bob Dylan, Ferron wrote the songs that make the young dykes cry, including “Girl on a Road,” “Shadows on a Dime,” and “Testimony” – influencing a generation of alterna-folk singers, including Ani DiFranco and The Indigo Girls. Fiercely funny Ferron is winsome, wise and wry, whether she’s discussing her tortured past or her misadventures with Warner Brothers – among her other partners.
Using a visual approach that echoes Ferron’s own pared-down arrangements, acclaimed filmmaker Gerry Rogers (My Left Breast) delivers an unplugged portrait of a Canadian folk icon. In a world devoid of positive representations of our age-fabulous LGBT revolutionaries, Ferron’s soft-butch stylings are poised to seduce anew many of our sisters in the struggle across generational divides. Every Friday night Shirley Hirsch (Laine Kazan) invites another “perfect” candidate for Sabbath dinner in hopes that her son Nelson (John Lloyd Young) will marry a nice Jewish girl. When Shirley and her husband Martin (Saul Rubinek) once again set him up on a date, Nelson reveals he is already seeing someone. In a maternal effort to find out who has stolen her son’s heart, she stops by his apartment unannounced and is greeted by Angelo (Jai Rodriguez), Nelson’s live-in boyfriend. Keeping things in the closet, Angelo introduces himself as Nelson’s decorator. Shirley also meets Nelson’s gorgeous neighbour and Playpen magazine centerfold, Sybil (Carmen Electra), who she naturally mistakes for Nelson’s mysterious girlfriend. Though concerned that Sybil isn’t Jewish, if her son is happy, she’s happy and she plans to introduce her to the family at an upcoming wedding. But instead, it’s Angelo they meet, and halfway through the ceremony Nelson comes out to his parents, prompting conniptions and barn-door-broad efforts at acceptance on the part of his parents. In the end however, love prevails in this romantic comedy about how far we have come and yet how far we still have to go. A roster of superb actors, including Vincent Pastore and the hilarious Bruce Vilanch make Oy Vey! My Son Is Gay! one film you can definitely bring mom to. [-]

NEW WAVE_ YOUNG QUÉBECOIS LGBT VOICES
The past few years have seen the birth of a whole new generation of Québecois LGBT filmmakers whose voices reflect not only the particularities of LGBT existence in Québec but also the perspectives and stand points that speak of and to a contemporary take on being LGBT in the 21st century.
Québec culture is born of a very specific francophone history - like all francophone diaspora cultures are - and the point of this gathering of voices is to explore the elements that make these cultural productions so very different from French production, for example. Québec, while having its very own history and culture, has also evolved within a North American culture context, thus there are not only English Canadian influences at work, but also American influences. What we have witnessed over the past few years, however, is the growth of a specific language and the telling of a very different and specific story. This is the premise from which we want to explore in this discussion.
This masterclass / panel invites five young filmmakers whose works have been screened locally and internationally to come together to explore - among other topics - the notion of the exportation of their cinematic experience as Québecois LGBT filmmakers.
An interactive event, audience participation is both welcomed and encouraged.
Invited guests include:
Anne De Léan, Rewind
Jasmine Gervais, Son of the Preacher
Etienne Désrossier, Miroir d’éte

From the elegant symbolism of the empty flatbed concluding Sao Paulo’s mammoth pride parade, to Moscow Pride organizer Nikolai Alekseev’s Byzantine ingenuity and dogged determination, Beyond Gay – The Politics of Pride is a moving portrait of international LGBT struggles for human rights. Vancouver Pride Marshal Big Gay Ken (Coolen) explains the difference between marches and parades, and the importance of confronting the “authorities in your own communities,” as he visits countries where attempting to stage pride festivities invites extreme reactions.
First-time director Bob Christie teams up with Aerlyn Weissman (Forbidden Love) in this panoramic meditation on the state of our queer nations. A refreshing and clearly Canadian perspective on LGBT rights at home and abroad, it features generous footage of local Pride events, and interviews with an international roster of LGBT human rights heroes. As with last year’s Gai… et après, Beyond Gay reflects an emerging trend in which our listless and stagnant celebrations return to their fiercely flamboyant roots – by expressing an international solidarity with oppressed LGBT people everywhere. As Tomasz Baczkowski, President of Warsaw Equality Pride eloquently states, “if it’s a movement, a pride movement… then we should move something.” [-]

If this film were an episode of Survivor, its motto would be “Outbitch. Outsnitch. Outwitch.” The ho’ in WeHo, Tiffani (Eating Out holdover Rebekah Kochan) coaches man-hunting acolyte Casey (Daniel Skelton) on the finer points of the fake online profile. Before you can shout “six out gay actors,” Casey is using Tiffani’s ex-boyfriend Ryan’s photograph to lure soulful Zack (Chris Salvatore) to him. However, the best-laid lies go awry when Ryan unexpectedly reappears... A buffet of crispy, deep-fried hunks, served in nutty sauce reflects new trends in tastelessness – Eating Out 3: All You Can Eat offers a main course of low-cal, piquant silliness that will affront, amuse and arouse you – simultaneously!
Glenn Gaylord (obviously) directs this instalment of the first queer three-quel, co-written by Q. Allan Brocka (Boy Culture, Rick and Steve), in which Kochan is the only survivor, and stars John Waters stalwart Mink Stole. Pint-sized powerhouse Leslie Jordan’s (Will & Grace) restrained performance tempers this high-sodium guilty pleasure. [-]

The Summer of Love produced many cultural touchstones, not the least of which was the Toronto-based collective General Idea, who would take the international art world by storm. In her documentary portrait, Mangaard looks back on the lives and works of this trio of gay artists who, after forming in 1969, became synonymous with contemporary Canadian art and the beginnings of queer culture as it exists today.
Producing art that mimicked the media, commercialism, and the art world itself, General Idea’s Jorge Zontal, AA Bronson and Felix Partz worked in every form imaginable, quickly reaching art star status with major shows in Paris, Berlin and Amsterdam. It wasn’t until the 80s, however, with the AIDS pandemic reaching full force that General Idea would produce their most iconic and recognizable work.
With the tragedies of HIV/AIDS taking over, General Idea was torn apart by devastating losses. Turning to AA Bronson – the sole surviving member of General Idea – to reflect on the lives and influence of the collective, Mangaard’s film honours some of the most pioneering, boundary-pushing artists of our era. A surreal cityscape sets the background for this search for enduring love. As bathrooms morph into backrooms, handsome, virile young men connect with partners of both sexes. A loving Ryo encounters the sensitive Kieri, unleashing an enduring and erotically charged passion between them. Consumed with jealousy, long-suffering Tari, a denizen of deserted spaces, abducts Ryo. A determined Kieri scours the bathrooms and mountaintops for Ryo, undertaking an arduous journey which may require the ultimate sacrifice for love. As the film moves from amazing black-and-white to soft colour, it appears that all is not lost…
Julián Hernández (Broken Sky) concludes his heavenly trilogy with his second Teddy-award winning effort, noted for its technical excellence. His focused and patient direction is ably supported by an inventive soundtrack, exquisite real-time colour correction, and striking imagery. A thoughtful mix of the modern and the mythological, Rabioso Sol, Rabioso Cielo reincarnates classics like Orpheus and Eurydice and Popol Vuh for LGBT people, hitherto hidden from history – and mythology. Flamboyant Quentin Crisp is the indelible thorn in the side of conservative England in this 1975 award-winning film based on Crisp’s autobiography of the same name. The Naked Civil Servant reshaped the modern image of homosexuality and inspired this year’s Crispian offering, An Englishman in New York. This dramatization of Quentin's first volume of autobiography won BAFTAs for its director Jack Gold and its star.
John Hurt gives a dazzling performance as the young Quentin, a flame-haired flamboyant homosexual when such things were not permitted. It contains much of the wit and wisdom of Quentin and celebrates a life lived in a refusal to conform. The highlight is Quentin's impassioned speech from the dock when charged with soliciting for an immoral purpose – he reminisces over a night of perfect happiness and declares himself one of the “stately homos” of England. In Maria Beatty’s feature film, Bandaged, the terror of biological family meets the lust of unmitigated lesbian desire, and both become unhinged. Another Gothic day in a dreary mansion in the middle of a forest. On the precipice of her 18th birthday, home-schooled Lucille (Janna Lisa Dumbrowsky) is feeling helpless and hopeless. Her father, sinister and stifling plastic surgeon Arthur (Hans Piesbergen), insists on the primacy of calculus as opposed to Oscar Wilde and Rimbaud. Lucille survives a horrific misadventure involving sulphuric acid and suicide – her beauty in tatters, bandaged tightly. After treating Lucille at home, Arthur hires Joan (Susanne Sachse), a ravishing nurse with a compromised history – and comfortable with Arthur’s cutting-edge science. As Lucille heals, she discovers comfort and tenderness in the sterile ministrations of attentive Joan, and the fury of their passion unfurls itself as the bandages unwind...
Eyes Without a Face and Mädchen in Uniform get a little Nip/Tuck. Ably produced by Abel Ferrara, Beatty’s brother-in-porn, Bandaged is bound to captivate the uninitiated with its painstaking detail, patient and possessive cinematography, lavish post-production values and Michael Karlsson’s elegant score. Add to this a pinch of exploitation, manipulation, excess and estrangement, and you’ve got a sense of the sexually charged vignettes that make up this highly seductive (horror) film. [-]

How does a political science major and The Mac Neil/Lehrer News Hour intern end up a homeless hustler? The Good American begins as German expatriate Tom Weise winds down his illegal 15-year stay in NYC. Fast-talking and feisty Weise is the co-founder of both rentboy.com, currently the reigning escort/hustler web site, and the notorious sex/sex work positive Hustlaball. Weise candidly shares his ambivalent reflections on different HIV treatments, finding love, his business partnerships and the disparity in sexual and social mores between Germany and the United States.
Prolific documentary filmmaker Jochen Hick (Life/Sex in L.A., Cycles of Porn) continues his exploration of LGBT subcultures. Generously laced with hot clips of the notorious Hustlaball, it also features cameos from and interviews with Cece Peniston, Chi Chi La Rue, Victor Steel and Bruce Villanch. Although Hick pulls his punches in this unconventional rags-to-reinvention tale, the energetic, enigmatic Weise and his stable of bare-bodied, beautiful stars, make this enormously entertaining viewing. Maxi (Javier Cámara, La mala educación) of Casa Xantarella in chic Chueca, is hot for a Michelin rating – and even hotter for Horacio (Chilean superstar Benjamin Vicuña), an Argentinean ex-soccer star. However, Maxi’s lovelorn and lustful maitre d’ Alex (Lola Dueña, 20 Centimetros) has also set her sights on Horacio. A chef on the verge of a culinary breakthrough, Maxi doesn’t seem to have any secrets (besides recipes) in his closet.
Fantasies of gastronomic greatness and redemptive romance collapse like a soufflé when Alba and Edu, Maxi’s real children from a sham marriage, reappear in his life... As grieving Edu challenges the nearly visible limits of Maxi’s patience, can Ramiro the sous-chef get it together before the Michelin Man arrives?
Nacho G. Velilla serves up a queer Bella Martha in this blend of haute cuisine, high camp and higher-strung hets in his appetizing debut. Garnished liberally with awards and nominations (notably a Goya for Best Actor for Javier Cámara), Velilla’s refreshingly light sauté of complex personalities with spicy issues is leavened by its unconventional couplings and portrayal of an all-too-human gay dad. In The Other War, three Tel-Aviv women navigate the complicated world away from the combat zone. Quiet and thoughtful Eli is head over heels for the gorgeous Naama, a free spirit and non-conformist. Meanwhile, Eli’s sister Galit frantically attempts to plan her wedding, just two weeks away, though her groom has been called to service during the second Lebanon war. Eli is trapped between the desire for freedom and individualism, embodied in Naama, and the need for conformity and loyalty, even in dire times, embodied in Galit. First-time director Tamar Glezeman sees these two characters as fictional representation of the opposing viewpoints regarding the demands of Israel as a nation. [-]

John Greyson once again dazzles the senses and challenges the intellect with his new experimental documentary, a remarkably complex and moving rumination on AIDS activism, St. Teresa of Avila and Gertrude Stein, all plaited into an avant-garde opera featuring a singing albino squirrel. Greyson intercuts interviews with heroic AIDS activists Tim McCaskell (founding member of AIDS Action Now, Toronto) and Zackie Achmat (Treatment Action Campaign, South Africa) with a surreal narrative in which Gertrude Stein abducts the two men to Niagara Falls, where their fictional counterparts sing atonal arias originating from Stein and Virgil Thomson’s Four Saints in Three Acts. Heady stuff, indeed, yet Greyson also finds room for a campy countdown of the Top 100 AIDS Songs. Greyson’s radical politics and outré aesthetics are in full flower here: The Queen’s Throat author Wayne Koestenbaum opines from his piano bench, Stein and Thomson leaf through an issue of Vanity Fair, Bono leads a parade of celebrity do-gooders and a candy-coloured cascade of pills rain down over the afflicted. Music provides solace, as Greyson’s fantasia on art and activism posits the disarming question: would we need opera in a world without tragedy? [-]

Dismayed at the corruption and hypocrisy of the Bolshevik Revolution leaders, a group of educated and idealistic sailors instigate the notorious Kronstadt Uprising of 1921. They establish a workers’ paradise where the homoerotic and the homosocial coexist peacefully, luxuriating in the languid days of chores and exercise regimens, and nights of steamy passion – before its bloody and inevitable suppression.
From the agit-prop theatre of The Blue Blouses to Jascha Ephraim’s evocative score, Cary Cronenwett masters the details and devils in this imaginative re-enactment of an historic event. Conducting a cast of hundreds of trans men, he magnifies the connection between class struggles and gender oppression, in the most original docudrama since John Greyson’s Lilies.
Putting the gay back in Sergei Eisenstein’s Battleship Potemkin, Cronenwett lights a powder keg of possibilities in his magical and magnificent treat for beefcake connoisseurs, film and history buffs and lovers of men (sometimes) in uniform. Like Chant d’amour and Querelle, Maggots and Men headlines a glittering programme examining competing brands of masculinity. [-]

After an argument with his mother ending in her suicide, aimless but amiable Ming (Lee Chi-Kin) finds himself alone. Influenced by his roommate Cyrus, he starts taking drugs and exploring prostitution. His boyfriend however, the bookish and boyish Yan (Alex Wong) disapproves, and their hitherto promising partnership deteriorates. After Ming’s misadventure with poppers and Viagra, Yan has Ming committed to the New Life Christian Rehabilitation Centre. There, Ming meets the charismatic, handsome ex-heroin addict, Keung (Guthrie Yip). After Ming completes rehabilitation, he goes to live with Keung and his fun-loving femme fatale Jackie (Joman Chiang) – with unpredictable results…
A film graduate from York University, Simon Chung’s sophomore film tackles drugs and prostitution, sensitive issues in his native Hong Kong. Lee Chi-Kin’s pivotal portrayal of a young man struggling with intimacy and trust, are underscored by Chung’s non-judgemental, if stark, cinematography. Like fellow citizen Hung Wing Kit (Soundless Wind Chime), he prefers the messiness of life in the margins, in a terrific year for queer Hong Kong film. [-]

A pick-pocket becomes a thief of hearts in the claustrophobic alleys of Hong Kong. German-Swiss Pascal (Bernhard Bulling) is the unwilling accomplice of a violent con man. Cautious and cute Ricky (Lu Yulai), a recent immigrant from Beijing, lives with his aunt, a prostitute who needles her nephew tirelessly between tricks. After pinching Ricky’s wallet, Pascal then accidentally stumbles into Ricky’s place of work – where an unlikely relationship develops between them. A tragedy forces Ricky to undertake a journey to Switzerland where he attempts to reconcile loss and love; a staunch believer in reincarnation, he encounters Ueli, a dead-ringer for Pascal…
Although Hung Wing Kit’s stunning debut film veers precipitously towards self-conscious artiness, and the occasional narrative omission, it poetically reconstructs the story of a rootless and rugged love between two hapless immigrants. Evoking the cinematic audacity of auteurs like Tsai Ming-Liang and Wong Kar-Wai, Soundless Wind Chime captures the intensity of young love in a bustling city, finding its true magic in love’s wake: where memory is as palpable as a steady breeze. In To Faro – touted as a German Boys Don’t Cry – Mel is a gender-variant factory worker ready to leave small-town Germany and finally see the world. When plans goes awry, Mel’s path leads to two hitchhikers, Jenny and Bianca, who believe Mel to be a handsome Portuguese man Miguel – sensitive but studly. Embracing the mutual attraction with spirited Jenny, Mel seizes the opportunity for reinvention. When Mel’s family increases the pressure to be more stereotypically feminine and start dating, Mel pretends a co-worker from Faro is a boyfriend. This awkward self-misrepresentation seems to appease the family just as Mel’s new relationship reaches ecstatic heights. But perhaps the ruse has its purpose: Mel is finally able to ruminate about sexuality and gender identity through the complicated world that has been created.
To Faro alternates from an endearing love story to a drama about the social pressures of convention. Anjorka Strechel as Mel and Lucie Hollmann as Jenny radiate naivety and earnestness, yearning for each other with genuine wonder. Alternately bewildered, exhilarated and uncertain, they remind us what it means – and what sacrifices we make – to be young and in love. [-]

18-year-old gang member Cal has little in his life but drugs, drinking, violence and a certain secret that he keeps hidden from his mates. He spends his nights scouring the Internet for anonymous hook-ups, recording the encounters on his cell phone. While these provide temporary relief, they do little to dampen his unspoken desires for Jonno, his straight best friend, who can’t express his own affection for Cal either. Nessa – their twisted, foul-mouthed gang leader – suspects something must be going on. Manipulating situations with brute force, Nessa sets out to confirm her suspicions and divide loyalties. When the gang randomly bashes effeminate student Olivier, Cal steps in to halt the attack. Fearing retaliation, Cal speeds off in his car after Olivier, who lets him hang out in his flat. After a sweet seduction scene, Olivier exposes Cal to a tenderness he has never known. Meanwhile, Nessa plots revenge. A brutal and utterly shocking confrontation leaves no one unscathed. 21-year-old director Pearce crafts a raw and compelling debut that defies typical coming-out film conventions. The sex is explicit, the violence is harrowing, and the young cast is utterly impressive in this gritty drama for the YouTube Generation. [-]

A prospective candidate for E.U. membership, Turkey represents a complex synthesis of Eastern and Western influences; fabled and fabulous Istanbul has an international reputation for being relatively liberal. However, woolly laws about public conduct and morals continue to provide flimsy pretexts for limiting LGBT freedom of expression.
A triple minority, anti-militarist, Kurdish and out-and-proud Mehmet Tahran fiercely defends Lambda Istanbul and himself, from legal action and well-meaning interviewers. Öykü is a daring and dynamic leader of Gökkusagi Bursa, a transsexual and transvestite lobby and support group. Distraught Mert is leaving Istanbul for the relative peace afforded by small-town living. Beginning with a clandestine get-together and ending with a resolutely defiant Pride march, moving personal accounts from those most at risk eloquently frame feminist and LGBT struggles, against non-secular trends in Turkish government and society.
A sequel (of sorts) to Halbes Leben (image+nation 18), Döndü Kiliç fascinating and fresh documentary deftly uncovers the other (queer) side of Istanbul. [-]

Three women, two cultures, one love... Ghosted is an ethereal lesbian love story that bridges the ocean between Eastern and Western cultural beliefs. Artist Sophie Schmitt travels from Hamburg to Taipei to come to terms with the sudden and unexplained death of her Taiwanese lover, Ai-Ling. While in Taipei for the opening of her exhibition, Sophie meets Mei-Li, a pushy and beautiful journalist who eerily reminds her of Ai-Ling. Mei-Li’s constant questions and flirtatious overtures are too much, too soon, and Sophie retreats to Hamburg. When the journalist mysteriously turns up on her doorstep, Sophie decides to open herself to new sexual adventures. Her newfound trust is soon shattered when she discovers that Mei-Li isn’t who she claims to be. Suspenseful and complex, this globetrotting narrative is part love story, part detective thriller.
Returning to festival screens after years of documentary practice, acclaimed director, Monika Treut (Virgin Machine, Female Misbehavior, Gendernauts) delivers an intimate and haunting work on the lasting power of love and the bridging of cultures. [-]

A porn star’s disappearance at the height of his fame becomes an all-consuming passion for both another adult film star and journalist. Mark Anton (Jared Grey, The Art of Being Straight) disappears into a fog of rumours in 1995. Michael (Matthew Montgomery, Redwoods) an investigative journalist writing a book about porn stars, moves into a dream apartment where he stumbles across a videotape that might have captured Mark’s final moments. However, as Michael’s investigations deepen, an untimely death and his boyfriend’s strange behaviour smudge the lines between the real and supernatural.
At the same time, smug porn star Matt Stevens feverishly pens a screenplay inspired by his dream about Mark Anton. However, ghostly appearances and mysterious occurrences threaten both the production – and perhaps, himself.
A gripping whodunit where the kill is the ultimate thrill, David Kittredge’s entertaining if uneven buff-n-snuff debut is masterfully lensed and exquisitely edited. Echoing The Ring and Surveillance (image+nation 20), actors reprising different roles, up the eerily layered ante. David Lynch fans will love this sinister mix of mindf*ck and hot hunks that will challenge both your heads! [-]

Angelic Antonin (Hubert Benhamdine), an aspiring punk rocker and sensitive soul is having a hard time. A university dropout, his family is being threatened with eviction, but Antonin himself is hypnotized by his band mate, best friend – and heroin addict – Alex (Frank Victor). A backroom tragedy plunges Antonin into a savage and scary quest for love. As money changes hands, a mec-à-louer is born. In his reckless and relentless adventure, he encounters the wild and winsome Juliette, a woman with a few secrets of her own…
Hormoz Borbor’s infrared palette, edgy editing and frenetic photography occasionally threatens to overtake his brilliant debut about the bisexuality and byways of love. Evoking films like Avant que j’oublie and New Wave, Borbor continues the French queer film tradition of demolishing our self-serving myths and exploring taboos with discomfiting and uncanny candour. Liberally peppered with coldwave/post punk hits by superstars Complot Bronswick and LAShTAL, David Kelly’s evocative score drives this searing portrait of addiction, where love is the ultimate drug. Jarle almost has it all. His band-mate and best friend is the anarcho-punk ideologue Helge, and girlfriend Kathrin is beyond cool. As the Berlin Wall comes down, their fortunes go up, as they score a chance to open for the local indie-punk wunderkinds, Mighty Dogfood.
However, Jarle’s groove is instantly, if reluctantly, rocked by the arrival of the flaxen-haired, synth-pop siren, Yngve. As Jarle’s attraction grows, he starts letting his loved ones down, leading to a showdown at a private party – and the most unusual declaration of love in recent LGBT coming-out film…
Debutant Stian Kristiansen was yanked out of film-school to direct this effervescent and entrancing distillation of Tore Renberg’s best-selling eponymous novel. Driven by an energetic New Age/punk score and its charismatic ensemble cast of unnervingly talented youth, The Man Who Loved Yngve almost single-handedly spearheaded a revival of Norwegian cinema. In addition to Patrik, Age 1.5, image+nation has the privilege of presenting not one but two Scandinavian films this year. [-]

Desperate househusbands and ex-urbanites Göran (Gustaf Skarsgård, son of Swedish superstar Stellan) and Sven (Torkel Petersson) have emigrated to a Swedish Wisteria Lane. Approved for adoption, both are anxiously awaiting (for very different reasons), the arrival of Patrik, age 1.5. However, a bureaucratic error finds a homophobic, knife-handling teen with a predilection for petty theft on their doorstep, provoking a perplexing reaction from Sven, himself once a darling little delinquent.
Ella Lemhagen’s witty and wry look at the ties that unwind, elegantly wrings the tired and treacly tropes of gayby-boomer rom-coms for thoughtful laughs. Adroitly employing gaydoption to expose festering class differences and lingering homophobia, the Midnight Sun bounces off Lemhagen’s savvy and sobering mirror, reflecting us in our strengths and weaknesses. As with Chef’s Special, image+nation’s increasingly sophisticated viewership will appreciate this polemics-and-preaching free portrait of a society in flux, and empathize with the less-than-saintly gay men in their curiously queer quandaries. No dancing queens here but lots of Dolly Parton in this film-circuit runaway hit! [-]

After decades of free-range living, a dauntless butch-dowager Hanna (Sharon Gless, Cagney & Lacey, Queer as Folk) has one last battle to fight. Although her beloved Rachel lies on life-support a few rooms over, Rachel’s daughter Marge (Nina Cortlandt of As the World Turns) religiously forbids her from visiting, insisting that Hanna isn’t family. Between her feisty, foul-mouthed and incisive critiques of her predicament, Hanna imaginatively reconstructs her relationship with demure, dignified Rachel that has weathered the test of time. As Hanna despairs of ever seeing Rachel, a beautiful stranger appears with an irresistible offer…
Wendy Jo Carlton’s effortless adaptation of Claudia Allen’s hit play hums with intelligence and wit. Ably helmed by Sharon Gless, lesbian icon and long-time companion of the LGBT community, Hanna Free is timely and thoughtful agit-prop for Proposition 8. Billed a lesbian version of On Golden Pond, it was briskly shot on a shoestring in 17 days, and salutes seniors loving seniors. An unabashed celebration of butch-femme love with a Mid-western twist, Hanna Free is an intergenerational tribute that acknowledges our past and present struggles – with hubris and humour. [-]

The rise and fall – and rise again of the Stately Homo of England. Following the runaway success of The Naked Civil Servant, Quentin Crisp receives a commission for a one-man show in Manhattan. At 72, he attracts critical acclaim, cult status – and his agent, Connie Clausen (Swoosie Kurtz). Insouciant and incisive, his prêt-à-porter observations find him accused of “playing to the straights.” Alienated, he finds comfort with artist Philip Angus (Jonathan Tucker, The Deep End), a kindred spirit, whom Crisp promoted tirelessly. His fortunes are revived upon teaming up with the trenchant and trashy Penny Arcade (Cynthia Nixon, Sex and the City), and buoyed by his friendship with Village Voice editor ‘Philip’ Steele (Denis O’Hare).
Richard Laxton’s light direction is enriched by attentive set design and confident performances. John Hurt’s effortless reincarnation of Crisp won a Teddy award at the Berlinale for Best Performer. A seventy-minute sashay on the Wilde-an side, An Englishman in New York celebrates the “triumph of the resolute individual against the faceless multitude.” [-]

An exquisitely tender evocation of the delicate, dreamy netherworld between lust and love, Boy is pure pleasure from start to finish. A poetic well-off youth, not quite as naïve as his sensitive good looks suggest, visits a gay bar one evening and is smitten with one of the young macho dancers. Returning with enough cash to rent Aries, the lad takes him home for New Year’s Eve. Sure enough, fireworks ensue after holiday dinner with Mom, amid the boy’s numerous aquariums. Solito suggests it’s more than physical attraction, or even the irresistible allure of “the other,” that binds the two and they easily transcend economic and educational barriers, making a powerful connection. Through scenes between the boy and his mother and Aries and his father, it becomes clear that the youths are decent, solid guys connected to their families and mainstream society. Instead of the tormented, guilt-stricken or self-destructive teens that populate many queer movies, this deeply satisfying film gives us self-aware lads destined to grow into self-assured men. From nuanced socio-political commentary to a lengthy, lovely, languid love scene, Boy makes all the right moves. [-]

If you were contending with aspiring rivals, a jerk-cum-junkie lover, and your army-deserting, homicidal and homophobic son, you too, would be at wit’s end. Abandoning chaotic, complicated Lisbon, fading drag superstar Tonia and cute-if-crazed Rosário find themselves lost – and stumble upon the elegantly decorated, enchanted dragtopia inhabited by Maria Bakker and Paula in a classic Stein-Toklas pairing. Amidst infrared eclipses and mythical creatures, Tonia confronts her ambivalent existence between genres through Bakker’s urbane utterances. Returning home, Rosário and Tonia rediscover buried touchstones, and things come full circle. Religious Tonia becomes reconciled to her life, amidst plaintive outbursts of song.
Enfant terrible João Pedro Rodrigues (O Fanstasma, Odete) revisits tragic tranny territory, harkening back to the Crawford/Davis vehicles of yore. Foregoing vivid spectacles for magic of the mundane, he refuses to comply with our cinematic expectations of empowering and positive messages. He challenges us with his dry-eyed vision of tired stereotypes, endowing them with a rare, schlock-free dignity. Mourir comme un homme competed in the prestigious Un certain regard programme at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, widely touted as the gayest – ever. [-]

The trailer park love child of Thelma and Louise and The Opposite of Sex, Drool is an outrageous dark comedy that will leave audiences salivating for more. Meet the miserable Fleece family. Dad abuses mom, Anora (Laura Harring, Mulholland Drive), daughter Tabby storms around in a teenaged snit and son Little Pete is bullied at school. Enter Imogene (Jill Marie Jones), the Kathy K. Cosmetics saleswoman who moves in next door, peddling products for the cocoa-skinned woman. Despite her arrival in a neighbourhood not too keen on cocoa-skinned anything, the unstoppable Imogene proceeds to give the family a radical makeover, starting with hand lotion and ending with a road trip in her purple Kathy K. car. Along the way, Imogene swiftly replaces the fantasy man who’s been starring in frustrated Anora’s steamy daydreams, and before you can say “purple eye-shadow” the daydream turns into reality.
Under its outrageous plot, which includes racism, domestic violence, high school blowjobs, homicide and lots of masturbation, Drool is a sweet-natured Southern gothic about familial love with a generous helping of hilarious dead-pan humour. [-]

Port Gamble is a saccharine-sweet town where puppies are pets, liberal teachers jog in the fresh island air and American flags sway proudly on manicured lawns. But all is not well on the island – Frida has dropped out of Princeton, Reverend Haggis gets better church attendance during Bingo Nights and Tom is terrified of coming out as he brings his boyfriend home to meet his mom. Mom’s already been exposed to the virus though, and needless to say, reacts to the news that her son is gay like a zombie. Taking place right after the U.S. invaded Iraq, race and sexual identity politics are examined as Frida, an Iranian-American, is captured by a local bigot. There’s no preaching in this film though, and the guts and yuks at the centre of it make for a compelling watch. Writer and director Kevin Hamedani, an Iranian-American, takes inspiration from the way he was treated after 9/11 – terrorists are blamed for the infection while Tom and his boyfriend try to fight off zombie attacks after coming out to mommy. ZMD is a gore-filled satire that combines deadpan humour with a light, post-911 commentary, taking a kitschy cue from Night of the Living Dead while delivering genuinely witty moments. [-]

Do hormone therapy and surgery make the man? If they do, what kind of man? Jules Rosskam’s eclectic fusion of dramatic re-enactments and spoken-word performances by Willy Wilkinson depict the vast range of experiences of trans men. Although viewers unfamiliar with feminist trends and gender theory might find this initially overwhelming, an inter-generational, multi-racial dialogue on feminism and trans-masculine issues, and Rosskam’s inclusion of intimate video footage keep it real. There’s something for virtually everyone in this courageous and profoundly personal project.
Documentary film circuit veteran Rosskam (Transparent) returns with a unique synthesis of experimental and traditional documentary styles. Citing Bertolt Brecht and Marlon Riggs’ Tongues Untied as diverse seminal influences, he explores the fluid relationship among body, gender and identity – and conflicting ideas around them. And while questions beget only more questions, it underscores the fact that while identity politics will get us started, they certainly won’t get us finished. [-]

Think Thirteen Conversations about One Book: The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSMD). A veritable Who’s Who of academics, activists and artists in San Francisco’s revolution-prone and vibrant transgender community deconstruct, then dispel their medicalization by that Bible of Psychiatry, through their own intelligent and intensely personal testimony. Clinical psychotherapist Annalise Ophelian’s landmark documentary is guaranteed to stimulate discussion rather than end it. It should be prescribed viewing for all health-care providers delivering services to transgender people; indeed, it was designed with this objective in mind.
People, not patients. Despite its decidedly American perspective, the diversity of experience and opinion reflected here ensure there’s something for our own cutting-edge and eclectic gender-variant communities. image+nation is proud to offer our loyal gender transgressors our most well-rounded programming yet, including festival circuit hits Against a Trans Narrative and Maggots and Men. Bring yourself, and your clueless but well-meaning psychologist, psychiatrist or social worker to Diagnosing Difference. [-]

If you liked Girlfight, but felt like it was missing strap-on action and penetration, then Champion is for you! Tattooed and tough Jessie is a rising MMA champ who not only has smooth moves in the ring, but also has mastered the fuck-and-run move outside of it. With every new conquest she leaves in the morning, Jessie becomes more detached and driven. Blackmailed by a jealous boyfriend to throw her next fight and forced by her manager to appear “less gay” for a photo shoot with her future opponent, Jessie must decide whether her career is more important than being herself. Relish in the sweet, sweet pain of scratching, hair pulling, bondage, slapping, anal, choking and biting, with some unexpected FTM action thrown in! The sex is sweaty, thorough and fierce and the actors really seem to be having fun. With authentic, quivering orgasms and quite a bit of rough play, the queer-made Champion brings the fight into the bedroom… and a van. [-]

Smart, snappy and stylish, sibling team Jacqui and David Morris’s terrifically entertaining first feature is a witty, heartfelt rom-com that pulses with the veddy English energy of Cool Britannia. Paisley-patterned opening credits worthy of Almódovar set the queer-as-folk tone, as Rufus Wainwright’s appropriately over-the-top “Oh What A World” serenades a metrosexual roundelay of cute couples.
Harry (James Lance) is an apathetic TV producer who wishes he could be anywhere-but-here while his cater-waiter boyfriend Alex (Luke de Woolfson) can’t seem to get any acting gigs. William is a widowed father hesitant to date again, but soap actor Lawrence makes a play for his affections anyway, while Tom, a well-to-do gay artist, and his eye-candy lover Larrs (Benjamin Hart) are busy gallivanting about town, shopping and bickering. Feelings boil to the surface when the group gathers to meet Louise’s latest boyfriend, and only the straight newcomer appears to enjoy the most awkward dinner party ever.
These hapless romantics and a bevy of relatives, exes, tricks and Mr. Right Nows favour witty repartee over gratuitous shagging, making Mr. Right a sophisticated yet still sexy stand-out. [-]
