Best friends Chase (actor/writer Charlie David,
Dante’s Cove) and suspiciously straight Tyler
(Derek Baynham) are spending the summer
together with Tyler’s golf-obsessed, perfect
family. After he comes out, Chase risks losing
Tyler’s friendship – but finds a surprising ally in
Tyler’s father Nathan (Dan Payne). However, as
Chase and Nathan putt around each other, one
man’s coming-out inspires an older man’s sexual
awakening.
Meanwhile, Nathan’s wife Stacy (Queer as
Folk alumna Thea Gill), is distracted from the
distance between them, by daughter Birdie’s
fascination with her female tennis coach… and
her interest in piercing and vegetarianism. Will
Chase and Nathan’s blossoming tee-off for two
circumvent the sand traps of true love?
Set amid the casual, polite homophobia of the
upper middle class, this ambitious queer retelling
of The Graduate is a fresh and multilayered
take on the coming-out genre. With grace
and sensitivity, director Chip Dale has made a
gorgeous film about second chances and the
links of life and love. [-]

A dinner invitation to gorgeous newbie Paolo
illuminates long-standing fault lines and fissures
in an apparently airtight circle of friends. Angelica
and Antonio are haunted by infidelity, as bitchy
and bossy Neval berates her docile husband
Roberto. Meanwhile, hedonistic and high-strung
Roberta is hostage to addiction and astrology, and
Sergio remains a cynical and sulky commentator
on his blended family’s interactions. Oblivious to
the simmering tensions within, Lorenzo, fairytale
partner to successful author Davide, idealistically
wants “… things as they are now, forever.” Little
does Lorenzo suspect that a Saturn opposition
will threaten the safety and stability of his ersatz
family…
Ferzan Ozpetek’s Saturno contro returns
to familiar territory: Characters struggling to
understand each other and themselves amidst
tragic events. Ozpetek favourites Stefano
Accorsi, Margherita Buy and Serra Yilmaz
elegantly shepherd this intimate and intricate
ensemble piece that echoes his magnificent
Le Fate ignoranti. Saturno contro presents an
empathetic and moving appeal for the official
recognition of same-sex partnerships in an
intensely conservative Italy. [-]

Although Jing, a beautiful masseuse-cum-singer
finds love with her butch accompanist Chalkie/
Deigo, her eight-year-old sister Meigo threatens
to wreck their budding alternative family. As Lily
struggles with her memories of loss and love
a childhood friend reappears, devastated by a
recent breakup. A risqué celebration inspires a
spicy initiation behind steamy windows – and a
fragile identity blossoms beneath bound breasts.
Drifting Flowers is a loosely-related trilogy of
stories about the infinite power of love to find us
wherever we are.
Another instalment of her proposed series
of six queer-themed films, lesbian director
Zero Chou (Spider Lilies) confronts aging,
butch-femme identities, heterosexism, HIV and
violence. Drifting Flowers occasionally threatens
to derail itself, but its Dogme 95 ambience,
emotional integrity and thematic variety keeps us
on the right track. Criticised for portraying butchfemme
stereotypes, Drifting Flowers steadfastly
refuses to airbrush and nail-varnish them for
mainlining by L-Word addicted mainstream
audiences. Blending art-house and commercial
values that characterise Taiwanese cinema,
Chou’s laissez-faire meditation on sexual identity,
perhaps reflects Taiwan’s own delicate political
transition. [-]

Gay siblings Omer and Shirley both share
larger concerns than Shoshanna (Israeli drag
super-nova Yoam Huberman), their overbearing
if well-meaning “Jewish mother from hell.”
Edging precipitously towards thirty, Omer is
desperately seeking love, and while Shirley has
scored the hottest woman in Tel Aviv, settling
into steady orbit doesn’t feel right. Meanwhile,
hunky Boaz is unnerved when two differentlybeautiful
men interrupt his relentless one-nightstanding.
Omer’s friend, the hook-up-aholic Miki
meets the hypnotic Ronen. Be it coincidence or
intelligent design, nothing short of a Big Bang
will reorganize this galaxy of (slightly) confused
and (significantly) good-looking shooting stars of
both sexes!
Yair Hochner’s Antarctica boldly continues the
Israeli tradition of delivering raunchy, realistic and
stirring sex in this light-hearted queer tribute to
Michael Winterbottom’s Wonderland. Unlike Good
Boys and last year’s controversial smash hit, The
Bubble, Hochner’s cinematic universe shifts its
focus to domestic and interpersonal politics.
Accompanied by a soul-searching soundtrack
for your inner dyke or emo-boy, Antarctica is a
guaranteed heart-warming late autumn thrill. [-]

Marooned and miserable at a stultifying camp,
introverted Iška is rescued by her bosom buddies
kittenish Karolina, and vacillating Vendula, for a
summer of love – or whatever. A once air-tight
camaraderie will be tested by adolescent agendas
and egos, and aggravated further by alcohol and
hormones. Karolina and Vendula devolve into
boy-crazy rivals, potentially courting tragedy.
Meanwhile, Iška is slowly but surely coming to
her Sapphic senses – despite the constant proxyparenting
of Vojta, her pesky younger brother.
Dolls is an edgy, intelligent and unpredictable
Czech version of the Sisterhood of the Travelling
Pants – frequently sans pants!
As with Legaturi Bolnavicioase (Romania)
and Disi Duboko (Serbia), Dolls, Czech director
Karin Babinská’s daring and darkly comic debut
feature reflects the open and vibrant culture
of queer film-making taking root in Eastern
Europe. Her calm, confident direction unleashes
bold performances, and breathes new life into
the stagnant road-movie genre. An explicit and
unstinting examination of the teenage wasteland,
where coming-of-age and coming out are cosily
nested amidst a host of hot-button issues. [-]

Over Christmas vacation in 1980, Nicolas
(Michaël Cohen) meets Bruno (Nicolas Gob,
Un amour à taire), his sister Isabelle’s current
squeeze – and realizes he would “do anything
for this guy.” Thus begins a saga spanning two
tumultuous decades where a mysterious disease
unleashes mayhem in the age of Mitterrand.
A daring and unusual family must come together
to redefine the boundaries of family and friendship,
while surmounting the barriers of class,
race and sexual orientation.
Sa raison d’être is relative unknown Renaud
Betrand’s loving recreation of an era dominated
by homophobic Vichy-era laws, intransigent
governments, Line Renaud, Sidaction, tainted
blood scandals and terrorism. Lush and starstudded,
Betrand’s television masterpiece is as
timely and urgent as the drug-resistant strains of
HIV challenging today’s message-resistant LGBT
youth. Hailed as the French version of Angels in
America for the text generation, Sa raison d’être
is essential viewing in this intergenerational
struggle with a devastating affliction. [-]

Abandoned churches, rural religious festivals
and sleazy tourist-oriented strip joints are the
backdrop for this tale about the enduring bonds
of friendship and label-free love. Enzo finds
respite from his brutal, homophobic father in his
fast friendship with neighbour and schoolmate,
Adong. However, can a friendship that survives
circumcision also weather Adong’s romance
with the winsome Melay, and his eventual move
to Manila? A five-year separation ensues after
which Adong and Enzo are reunited in Manila’s
thriving sex trade. As Adong battles unscrupulous
clients, landlords and pimpresarios, both Enzo
and he form a fragile new family…
An impressive debut, Bertubin’s reserved
direction weaves extended flashbacks and
naturalistic performances into a compelling
homage to Lino Brocka’s ground-breaking
Macho Dancer. Peppered with Pinoy pin-up
boys, Sikil continues a fine Filipino tradition of
exploring straight men in distinctly gay situations.
Newcomers Ken Escudero and Wil Sadejas are
simply mesmerising as the doe-eyed macho
dancers in this film about unconditional love. [-]

After Lucie (inadvertently) announces her wish
to have a baby, her partner Marion, reluctantly
relents. France, like Italy, restricts artificial
insemination to heterosexual couples, so Lucie
and Marion begin interviewing potential donors.
All seems hopeless, when Hugo of Montreal
suddenly reappears, delighted to deliver the raw
materials – only. Meanwhile Lucie’s parents,
aging 68ers, bemoan her bourgeois aspirations,
while Marion’s church-lady mother is Hail Mary
full of Homophobia. As Lucie becomes caught up
in pregnancy and prospective motherhood, Marion
feels redundant as the “non-carrying” partner,
a situation compounded by the return of the
hitherto indifferent Hugo…
Étienne Dhaene’s trademark humour and
quirky perspective freshens up the same-sex
parenting genre in his big-screen debut. A
fizzy borderline farce about the importance of
families of choice and turkey basters, it features
a biting script tempered with warm and wry
performances. Le nouveau monde is a knockout
film about pregnancy, pride – and the New
Yalta Accords. Le nouveau monde is this year’s
Spinnin’ filmed in LesboScope. [-]

Being straight is a lot harder than it used to be
for John (director and star, Jesse Rosen), who’s
recently moved to L.A. for a change of pace. He’s
crashing on his friend’s couch and working as a
gopher at an ad agency. No sooner has he made
his first mail delivery at the office does his predatory
boss Paul make an aggressive move for
John’s pants. Shocked but curious, John surprises
himself by giving in to Paul’s advances. This sets
off a sexual identity crisis for the reserved John
that lands him at the doorstep of lesbian college
buddy Maddy (Rachel Castillo), who’s pondering
a reverse-coming out of sorts. She’s fantasizing
about jumping the guy next door at the same
time as John wonders if he’s gay. Maddy’s flaky,
endearing approach is a change from the alphamale
culture of John’s home life, where the word
gay is synonymous with lame and bandied about
by John’s new crew like kids on a schoolyard.
Soul-searching abounds in this charming coming
out story that proves being straight is sometimes
just as tricky as being gay. [-]

At the beginning of U People, a disclaimer
reads, “When you view this film, do not make
assumptions about anyone’s sexuality” – and
you’d best put aside all your notions about gender
identity, too. Bold, beautiful, black and brown,
the “accidental documentary” U People shows
what happens when 30 hot and sharp women
and transmen of colour convene in a Brooklyn
brownstone, revealing a blend of experiences
and perspectives rarely voiced.
Shot over the course of two days on the set
of a music video, its subjects span sexualities
and genders, stepping out of a boxed-in society
and showing their beauty in a world that has too
often cast them as invisible. U People touches
on the relationships between mothers and
daughters, and civil rights and prejudice, while
challenging the ignorance that often lies behind
the designation “you people.” Directors Olive
Demetrius and Hanifah Walidah – partners in both
real life and in work – have created a powerful
and engaging romp that enters a world seldom
represented – and you’re invited to the party! [-]

A bizarre love triangle involving two bereaved
men and their mutual friend, Mark. A car accident

Mark’s friends of his untimely passing. As Mark’s
best friend and confidant, Jeff is astonished to

Although despondent to learn of Mark’s demise,

Malaysian director Yen Tan (Happy Birthday)
delivers a queer homage to Louis Malle’s My

Air-tight framing, elegant sets and understated
performances amplify the erotic tensions

cinematic reflection on bereavement, friendship

sexy 84 Charing Cross Road for the Blackberry

romantic gem. [-]

The wonderfully decadent Dante’s Cove is set
in a small coastal town in Southern California,
and boasts a cast of eclectic characters – most
of them skaters, surfers, and college students.
The good-looking young residents of the Hotel
Dante are gay, lesbian, bi and straight, at a point
in their lives when they are full of hopes and
dreams. This bevy of sexy young queer residents
are plunged into a world of intrigue, secrets
and shifting romantic ties when their town’s
sinister, supernatural past comes alive in this
guilty television pleasure touted as the first LGBT
gothic thriller. As one would expect, madness,
murder, (lots of) sex, betrayal and very good
television ensue. In Season 3 the cast expands to
include: Reichen Lehmkuhl (The Amazing Race),
Jenny Shimizu and Jenson Atwood (Noah’s Arc)
as Griffin, the bisexual warlock who seduces his
way through the Cove’s residents. Continuing – if
not embellishing – image+nation’s tradition of
screening hard-to-find LGBT TV series, Dante’s
Cove is plain and simple visual pleasure (or is
it eye-candy?) with enough dramatic substance
to keep your eyes glued to the screen and your
senses satisfied. Leave your rigid cinéphile hat

gratifying queer TV. [-]

A single and succinct message – “Sex doesn’t
make you sick – diseases do” – defies a decade
of “misplaced morality masquerading as medical
advice,” a message taken for granted today. Firsttime
documentary filmmaker Daryl Wein delivers
a compelling portrait of Richard Berkowitz, a
forgotten member of an unlikely coalition to
unleash safer sex. Now almost deserted and
destitute, Berkowitz recounts his extraordinary
life, from his liberal, working-class background
and evolution into a top hustler. As a deadly
plague decimates, divides and stigmatises the
gay population in New York City, Berkowitz,
together with renowned activist/musician Michael
Callen, feverishly co-authored How to Have Sex
in an Epidemic: One Approach, a veritable Bible
of safer sex education and practice. However,
for advocating behaviours and strategies more
radical than the disease itself, Berkowitz was
branded self-hating and sex negative.
An entertaining, instructive examination of
pride, prejudice and promiscuity, Sex Positive
recovers and celebrates the courage and tenacity
of a man who put the “dom” in domesticity – and
condoms on cocks. [-]

With his trademark swagger, skintight jeans and
rock hard body on full display, Nights in Black
Leather thrust peter Berlin into the international
spotlight (and into the fantasies of thousands of
gay men). In this legendary film, Berlin stars as
himself, a German immigrant wandering around
San Francisco looking for adventure. With steamy
scenes shot all over the city, Nights in Black
Leather is both an exciting romp and an erotic
time capsule of gay life in San Francisco in the
early seventies. Nights in Black Leather packed
houses across the world for months and helped
to bring a degree of artistic legitimacy to gay male
erotic film. Relive those erotic moments, find out
what all the fuss was about or discover that man,
peter Berlin for the first time. Another restored

Black Leather celebrates its 35th anniversary
this year. Come experience the phenomenon. [-]

Filth and Wisdom should be subtitled Desperate
Flatmates. A.K., an SM Master, redefines good
horsemanship when not boring flatmates with
Borat-like pronouncements. As ballet-dancer
Holly learns new routines to survive, pharmacy
assistant Juliette pilfers pills to help Africa’s
unfortunates, while bickering with boss Sandeep
about… everything. A saucy and sexy tale of
three characters in search of a continuity editor,
they get Madonna instead… and a ray of light,
perhaps, at the end of a tunnel!
Handlebar-moustachioed helmsman Eugene
Hütz of Gypsy punk sensations Gogol Bordello,
headlines Madonna’s Confessions on the Silver
Screen. Describing her directorial debut Filth and
Wisdom as “essentially my way of putting myself
through film school,” she poaches ex-hubby’s
writer Dan Cadan, a bevy of East Enders and
Footballers Wives alumnus Francesca Kingdon.
An extended-length Coronation Street episode
on crack, Filth and Wisdom is low on filth and
high on fortune-cookie wisdom, but Madonna
keeps it together with a soundtrack that’s
absolutely brills! [-]

Gay siblings Omer and Shirley both share
larger concerns than Shoshanna (Israeli drag
super-nova Yoam Huberman), their overbearing
if well-meaning “Jewish mother from hell.”
Edging precipitously towards thirty, Omer is
desperately seeking love, and while Shirley has
scored the hottest woman in Tel Aviv, settling
into steady orbit doesn’t feel right. Meanwhile,
hunky Boaz is unnerved when two differentlybeautiful
men interrupt his relentless one-nightstanding.
Omer’s friend, the hook-up-aholic Miki
meets the hypnotic Ronen. Be it coincidence or
intelligent design, nothing short of a Big Bang
will reorganize this galaxy of (slightly) confused
and (significantly) good-looking shooting stars of
both sexes!
Yair Hochner’s Antarctica boldly continues the
Israeli tradition of delivering raunchy, realistic and
stirring sex in this light-hearted queer tribute to
Michael Winterbottom’s Wonderland. Unlike Good
Boys and last year’s controversial smash hit, The
Bubble, Hochner’s cinematic universe shifts its
focus to domestic and interpersonal politics.
Accompanied by a soul-searching soundtrack
for your inner dyke or emo-boy, Antarctica is a
guaranteed heart-warming late autumn thrill. [-]

Wrangler: Anatomy of

From the frisky, twisty mind of director Todd
Stephens (Another Gay Movie) comes this queer
comedy of sex and more sex. It’s Spring Break,
and best friends Nico, Griff, Jarod and Andy are
flush with schwing – er, spring fever. They head
to Fort Lauderdale, ready for a “gay spring break,
till our booties ache!” There, they all enter a
contest to determine which horny guy can sleep
with the most men. Our heroes all set out full
throttle to win, but keep running into complications:
from luvvy-duvvy monogamous couple
Griff and Jarod who decide to swing (telling
themselves they’ll withstand it), to waspy Andy
who falls for a hot Latin lover (thus reducing his
nightly body count) to hopeless romantic Nico,
who harbours fantasies of an ideal lover, here
in the cornhole capital of the world. When last
year’s bitchy reigning champion Jasper sets out
to foil their lusty liaisons and preserve his title,
defeat looms for the would-be hos.
Throw in hilarious turns by Lady Bunny, Scott
Thompson, Perez Hilton and RuPaul, lots of
gratuitous nudity and more hilarious pop
references than you can keep track of – from
Beach Blanket Bingo to Mean Girls and beyond –
and you’ve got a perfectly salacious sequel! [-]

This deadpan mockumentary from Down
Under offers a truly queer portrayal of a
presumably straight children’s dance troupe
and its overzealous politically correct instructor,
Mr. Jonathon. A technicolor extravaganza that
combines all the flair of Strictly Ballroom with
the camp of The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen
of the Desert, Razzle Dazzle brings a Christopher
Guest-like sensibility to our queer screen… and
not a moment too soon!
The “Jazzzketeers” prepare to out-dance their
rival team at the year’s biggest dance competition,
but can they win with a routine called the Kyoto
Protocol Shuffle? Mr. Jonathon’s dance vision has
yet to be appreciated by audiences or judges, but
this time he plans to add a little… razzle dazzle
to the mix. Enter the hysterics of pushy stage
mothers, celebrity gay dads, glitz, glamour and a
cocktail of nerves and hairspray and you have all
the makings of the next queer cult classic! [-]

Out Late tells the stories of five people who
came out later in life than most. From Cathy, who
lived in a closeted relationship with her female
partner for 24 years before tentatively coming
out, to 81-year-old Elaine, who burst out of the
closet 2 years ago, there is tremendous diversity
here. Most knew they were queer from an early
age, but were afraid to come out. Many of the
subjects had long heterosexual marriages and
children, and only considered coming out after
their spouses died. Each expresses the freedom
they felt when they finally acknowledged their
queerness and were honest with loved ones.
Even though it cost some of them dearly, they all
wish they had done it sooner. It’s not all roses,
as we see each person struggle with loneliness
and some strained relationships, but the
overwhelming message is that living in truth is
so much better than keeping secrets. A brilliantly
inspirational film that can’t help but make you
feel good to be alive, Out Late is a not to be
missed documentary. [-]

Leaving no stone unturned in their quest,
filmmakers Britany Blockman and Josephine
Decker take a cross-country road trip to find
out if there’s truth to the notion of a sharp rise
in the number of young Americans identifying as
bisexual. Is the recent rise in pop culture images
of bisexuality attributable to a bi-chic wave, or
is the “whatever” generation having its very
own sexual revolution? What they found was a
collection of fascinating characters from
Evanston, Illinois to the Ozarks in Arkansas, and
dozens of cities and small towns in between.
Opinions vary as to the definition of bisexuality: is
it about being greedy or undecided, or are we all
a little bi? Do bisexuals seek multiple partners?
Is it possible for someone who is bi to find a soul
mate? While the directors don’t claim to have all
the answers, the range of responses they include
in this fun, thought-provoking film help debunk
some bisexuality myths, while touching on
issues of internalized homophobia, growing up in
a queer family and coming out. [-]

As Ramon and Rosa prepare to die, they ask
their long-term lodgers to leave their multi-level
apartment within a week. Chic, cynical French
teacher Lola balks at the idea. David, his dreams
of professional soccer behind him, resists as he
nurses his damaged knee. Meanwhile Violeta, an
Argentinean émigré, approaches Ramon with a
surprise, as Rosa struggles to disclose a tragic
past to her gay younger brother. Landlord-tenant
relationships become an unlikely source of
twisted intimacies, truths and trysts in this study
of isolation, longing and redemption.
Veteran director Ventura Pons returns to
his favourite themes (history, homosexuality
and transvestism) and the power of clothes to
conceal as much as they reveal. Balanced
direction soothes the swings between the absurd
and realistic in this on-screen translation of
prolific Catalan playwright Lluïsa Cunillé’s
runaway hit of Barcelona, mapa d’ombres.
Black-and-white footage and gauzy, sepia-toned
updates link a dark past to an uncertain present.
A character-driven masterpiece elegantly helmed
by superstars Nuria Espert and Josep Maria Pou. [-]

The beautiful ocean near the city of Newscastle,
Australia takes center stage in this comingof-
age film focusing on the lives of the often
shirtless Jesse (Lachlan Buchanan), his brother
Fergus (Xavier Samuel), step-brother Victor
(Reshad Strik) and their friends. With the
exception of Fergus – who is more interested in
one of Jesse’s pals than he is in surfing – the
guys are hardcore surfers whose lives revolve
around their boards, their girls, and the ocean.
Rivalries serve as motivation, and none is as
bitter as the one between Jesse and Victor.
Needing a break, Jesse and his pals take off for a
weekend of surfing on a quiet beach away from
life’s stresses. The weekend is filled with sexual
exploration and teenage pranks until Victor
and his buddies arrive, looking for trouble. Not
surprisingly, tragedy strikes, changing each of
their lives forever. Gorgeous camera work above
and below water showcase the brilliant colours
of the sea and the landscape, not to mention
the surfers’ phenomenal bodies and outrageous
moves. [-]

The beguiling and bittersweet Les Chansons
d’amour is a modernist musical about sexual
fluidity, love, loss and happiness. Christophe
Honoré’s (Ma mère, Dans Paris) latest centers
around a young couple, Ismaël (Louis Garrel,
The Dreamers) and Julie (Ludivine Sagnier),
who – in the hopes of sparking up their stalled
relationship – enter a playful yet emotionally
laced threesome with Alice (Clotilde Hesme).
When tragedy strikes, these young Parisians
are forced to deal with the fragility of life and
love. All seems lost until Ismaël finds himself
pursued by a beautiful young schoolboy named
Erwann (Grégoire Leprince-Ringuet) whose total
devotion and innocence act as an antidote to
Ismaël’s pain.
Pacing the streets of Paris, collars upturned,
our young heroes sing out loud with humour and
surprising emotional depth in this Umbrellas of
Cherbourg-inspired musical-comedy-drama that
is sure to lift both your heart and your spirits. [-]

Gay… et après ? opens with activist and television
hostess La Prohibida serenading 2 million LGBT
people at EuroPride 2007 in Madrid. A world
away, Chinese Internet star and French teacher
Didier Zhang explains gay history to his students.
In “ever alert, always open” NYC, Frank Leon
Roberts examines the class and race divisions
between Christopher Street and Chelsea. Berlin’s
full-time leather archangel, Philipp Tanzer,
relishes the drabness of Berlin’s gay district while
bemoaning the desperate hook-ups and drugs.
As Daniel and Naira redefine love for themselves,
Anna Margarita Albelo searches for her Cuban
lesbian roots, while Parisian dykes mourn the
passing of their own Studio 54, the Pulp. Could
a new era of LGBT activism be dawning as
pink revolutions worldwide are undermined by
consumerism, integration and old-fashioned
political repression?
Jean-Baptiste Erreca (Cowboy Forever) assembles
six French documentary filmmakers for this
pulsing, pumping and invigorating investigation
of international LGBT struggles. Enormously
entertaining, Gay… et après ? reflects on the
emerging identity crises, issues and realities
of the new LGBT Enlightenment in the age of

A sudden breakup shatters Rami, a 26-yearold
accountant and dance aficionado; as his
world implodes, his best gal-pal Dalia, a feminist
scholar, decides to pursue her doctorate in
California. Meanwhile, other gal-pal Kareem,
a respected physician, barely evades arrest on
The Queen Boat, in an incident that precipitates
seismic shocks in their personal and professional
lives. As Ramis self-righteousness is challenged
by steamy encounters with gorgeous strangers,
could his own personal safety be at risk?
At the centre of Egypts first openly-gay
film is the notorious Cairo 52 case. Filmed
over three years, and funded independently to
avoid charges of anti-Arab/pro-Western bias,
Maher Sabrys generous and thoughtful gem of
guerrilla filmmaking involved actors and technicians
from different Arab nations. Defiantly
political and uncompromisingly erotic, All My
Life portrays the tensions between acceptance
and self-loathing, courage and cowardice, and
feminism and fundamentalism. A potent indictment
of authoritarian rule, Sabrys masterpiece
restores immediacy and urgency to flaccid LGBT
liberation movements. Deriving its title from
Mohammad Abdel-Wahabs eponymous hit, All
My Life is a tour-de-force on the scale of last
years A Jihad for Love. [-]

Apple-martini connoisseur and skatergrrrl
Madison prepares for the journey of a lifetime,
while her grandmother, the vivacious 80-year-old
vixen Vivien, encourages her to lead the glamorous
life! A gentle inter-generation clash of cultures
around fashion and feminine comportment
ensue, serving to simply remind us how gender
is conceived and constructed. Filmed over three
years, it covers the highs and lows of Madison’s
transition – and her discovering unconditional
and unexpected love from Cameron, her best
friend. As a daughter and sister replace a son
and brother, Madison’s family, based in rural New
Brunswick, displays extraordinary grace under
pressure. Heartfelt and humorous, it gives us a
glimpse of what it feels like for a girl – inside.
Documentary circuit darlings, Maya Gallus and
Justine Pimlott (Fag Hags: Women Who Love Gay
Men) are back with this Gemini award-winning
coming-of-gender film. Girl Inside provides a
poignant portrait of a family in transition and
the singular pains and pleasures of meeting
yourself – twice. [-]

Uncertain and unconfident, Jasper, now engaged
to Wendy, is meeting up with high-school friends
Lily and Mark for a Halloween night to remember.
Goth-girl Lily, once gay Mark’s homeroom honey,
is now his roommate. As the hapless twentysomethings
journey to the centre of the Castro,
it becomes increasingly evident their bonds of
friendship are tangential at best. Everything is
brought to a head by Caleb, Mark’s sometime
playmate and loose-lipped nerd. Overwhelmed
by festive revellers and hoping to score a little
E, the testy trio set off in search of the elusive
dealer, Shanti. Jasper and Mark engage in a
stealthy emotional game that slowly reveals the
enduring ambiguities in their friendship.
Drawing its title from a treacherous stretch of
Californian coastline and an Xbox game, Gabriel
Fleming’s sophomore film melds the coming-out
genre to mumblecore. Its non-linear narrative
effectively mimics how the protagonists arrive
at their epiphanies. An ethereal soundtrack
underscores the grainy stonewashed gaiety
of Halloween, gently holding the viewer in a
whimsical audio-visual trance. [-]

The first woman and only the second living
portraitist to exhibit at the National Portrait Gallery
in Washington, D.C., Annie Leibovitz’s legendary
commercial shoots command an indie film’s
budget! Finally in focus, the acclaimed Rolling
Stone and Vanity Fair photographer recounts
her life framed by car windows or portholes,
road trips and revolutions. A careful composer of
controversy, Annie discusses her influential and
unorthodox relationship with Susan Sontag, and
motherhood at the age of 51.
Award-winning documentary filmmaker
Barbara Leibovitz crafts the perfect complement
of content and form, befitting her sister’s life well
lived in commercial photography. Leibovitz-the-
Younger’s style betrays her experience working
for Entertainment Tonight, generously weaving
the shoot for Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette,
with archival footage, intimate home movies
and photographs from Annie’s personal archive.
A lavish reflection on the branded American
life (not unlike Keith Haring’s own), it features
celebrity interviews with Mikhail Baryshnikov,
Hillary Clinton, Yoko Ono, Patti Smith, Gloria
Steinem, Jason Schwartzman, Whoopi Goldberg
– and many others. [-]

Queer auteur Bruce LaBruce (Hustler White,
Raspberry Reich) scores big in this tale of zombie
wanderlust, Liebestod, lust for blood, and just
plain lust. Pallid, ragged and stinky, Otto, a young
zombie, is a curious sight as he staggers and lopes
down a road to nowhere in particular. He doesn’t
know who he is or was, or where he’s going,
but he’ll soon feed again… and any dude who
cruises this mute, pallid waif is in for a surprise
between the sheets. Art imitates death when
Otto encounters underground filmmaker Medea
Yarn. She’s already producing a zombie movie
and recognizes a star in Otto, who gamely plays
the part he is already “living” for his Svengalilike
director. But when Otto recalls a sweet love
he once shared with another boy, he’s set on
a fearsome new path to reconcile the pieces
of his life and death. LaBruce’s observation of
voracious carnality is point-perfect, graced with
a note of pathos, and his pageant of engorged
organs and bodily fluids associates lust and
death with aplomb. [-]

Dreaming of living in a queer Leave It to Beaverstyle
household and playing Maria in West
Side Story, Tru escapes being in staid Agoura
Hills, the San Francisco – not! While dodging
football thugs, and Paris and Nicole clones, Tru
is astounded when cutie patootie quarterback
Lodell comes a-courtin’. Alas, Tru soon discovers
she is merely Katie Holmes to his Tom Cruise
– but reluctantly continues to be his tight-end.
Attempting to resolve her private reality with her
queer-positive principles, Tru co-founds a Gay-
Straight Alliance group – where she meets hottie
hetero hunk, Trevor. Complications ensue, and
one queer wedding (and no funerals) later, Tru’s
path to true love is anything but straight…
Stewart Wade scores a touchdown in this
distractingly star-studded feature! A snappy
script peppered with catchy emo-indie songs,
Tru Loved entertains and inspires with campy
characters and cameos from Jasmine Guy (in
a truly Different World!), David Kopay, Jane
Lynch (The L Word), Nichelle Nichols (Lt. Uhura
of Star Trek), Bruce Villanch and Baywatch
alumnus, Alexandra Paul. Tru Loved tackles great
expectations, homophobia and interracial dating
– and the importance of being yourself. [-]

Can a newly-wed avoid being tempted by a
guileless waiter at his own civil union? Does that
full-lipped young prodigy escape his schoolyard
tormentors? Is that doting, well-hung hunk
really a closet gay basher? Will a politician come
forward to bear witness to shocking violence?
Will a smoking teen predator eventually become
the prey? Five Altman-esque vignettes knit
themselves into a penetrating and provocative
portrait of British queerdom.
A BBC commissioned piece commemorating
the 40th anniversary of the decriminalisation
of homosexuality in England, director Adrian
Shergold and theatre wunderkind Kevin Elyot
revel in dry wit and wet willies in a full-frontal
review of contemporary political and sexual
mores. A studly cast headlined by Maurice
stalwarts Rupert Graves and James Wilby,
Clapham Junction ignited controversy and
outrage for relying on gay and straight clichés to
create a hard-hitting and haunting examination
of homophobia. Inspired by the horrific murder of
24-year-old Jody Dobrowski in 2005, Clapham
Junction is a sobering reminder that the price of
gay liberation is eternal vigilance. [-]

An intimate and unflinching look at life in Iran,
seen through the lens of those living at its
fringes, Be Like Others is a provocative look at a
generation of young men and women choosing
to undergo sex change surgery. In Iran, according
to Islamic law, homosexuality is punishable
by death. Ironically, sex-change operations are
not only legal; they are embraced by a society
that accepts male or female but nothing in
between.
With Dr. Mehrjalali’s sex-change clinic as
the arena, director Tanaz Eshaghian finds her
subjects among some of the kind, progressive
doc’s patients. Perhaps most interesting is
20-year-old Anoosh, who becomes a woman
named Anahita, alienating her gay boyfriend Ali.
Twenty-four-year-old Ali finds some support from
Vida, who’s had her operation and adjusted. The
very issue of why Iran’s Islamic laws compel
such drastic manoeuvres and adjustments on the
part of gay men runs under every scene, making
the film a model of non-dogmatic filmmaking on
a highly charged topic. [-]

“Are you part of the human race if you’re neither
a man nor a woman?” This question opens the
film L’ordre des mots, an intelligent exploration
of the world of transsexuality, intersexuality
and trans identity. At a time when these issues
draw more and more attention in the medical
community, LGBT movements and in the media,
this documentary, created by cousins Cynthia
and Melissa Arra, sets a welcome stepping stone
between the two extremes of the sacrosanct
Through interviews with six transgender and
intersex people, L’ordre des mots relates the
often-difficult personal stories of people who’ve
led complex lives. The documentary takes a
critical look at the arbitrary medical protocols
employed in France and provides an overview
of the work being done by the transgender
movements that, in addition to denouncing the
oppression and repression aimed at transgender
and intersex people, demand that people
speak out against the psychiatric and medical
discourse that treats transsexuality as an illness.
An inspiring and up-to-the-moment work about
our relationship to the concept of identity. [-]

Jess (Hannah Hogan) is a suburban twentysomething
in a bind. She’s married to Trevor
(Shaughnessy Redden), and falling in love with
Casey (Tracey Rae), a woman with whom she’s
begun a torrid affair. Jess’s nice-guy husband
wants to start a family, while Casey wants Jess
to come out of the closet and move in with her.
Jess’s childhood was filled with threats from
her mother about the evils of lesbianism. She’s
obsessed with the idea of having a “normal”
family, and terrified of facing her deep-rooted
desires. Living in a town that seems to have
more than its share of homophobes reinforces
Jess’s fears, despite the open-armed welcome
she receives from the queer community. Jess is
damned if she does, and damned if she doesn’t.
No matter what, someone’s bound to get hurt.
When she learns that she’s pregnant and her
affair is revealed, everyone must figure out how
to live with the consequences of Jess’s choices.
Juicy lesbian drama reigns in this coming out

First-time feature director Lucia Puenzo triumphs
in this moving drama about the pangs of
adolescence. Like any teenager, Alex feels the
thrills and fears that accompany the changes in
her young body. But living a secluded existence
with her Argentinian parents on the Uruguayan
coastline, Alex has been dealt a double-dose of
teen angst: born intersex but raised as a girl,
she has been sheltered throughout her life. Her
highly-evolved parents never forced on her the
surgery that would have decided her physical sex
forever, but there has never been a comfortable
way of acknowledging her situation publicly. On
the occasion of a visit from a friend of her father,
a plastic surgeon, Alex feels her fate closing in.
At the same time, her attraction to the visitor’s
teenage son, and the unwanted attentions of a
group of local boys, force Alex to an emotional
precipice where any step she takes may be
calamitous. Ines Flores turns in a riveting, unforgettable
performance as Alex in this shocking,
emotional and historic feature. [-]

There’s a thin line between art and porn – or porn and art – and photographer, writer and filmmaker Bruce LaBruce walks it like a tightrope. His highly charged, erotic films traffic in queer sexual iconoclasm, casting a unique light on a queer sub-culture filled with hustlers, drifters, fetishists, sadomasochists, revolutionaries and now, zombies. LaBruce’s work is explicit and shocking but always intensely humorous and ironic. For over a decade, this bad-boy of queer cinema has aroused, incensed and ultimately challenged audiences – igniting a fuse from the groin on up to the critical faculties. Coming to image+nation 21 with his latest opus, Otto; Or Up With Dead People the “reluctant pornographer” will lead a Masterclass, discussing his influences and motivations in fusing sex, politics and ideology together as a creative practice. Álvaro ekes out a living as book repairman and
reed cutter on an island in the remote Paraná
region in north-eastern Argentina. His daily
hard-scrabble and solitary existence is
punctured by the dull roar of La León, a water
bus piloted by its even louder helmsman, the
bigoted and brutal El Turu. Álvaro, a fisherman
and fisher of men, finds solace in furtive trysts
with foreign workers. As such, he becomes the
target of Turu’s misplaced ambition to protect the
rural inhabitants, resources and traditions from
exploitation by illegal loggers and missionaries.
Alternately magnetised and repelled by the
handsome and reticent Álvaro, another law of
desire secretly stirs Turu’s innermost tumult…
Santiago Otheguy’s prize-winning debut
feature La León, simultaneously blends
cinéma-vérité with romance, and with nuanced
performances enriching a taut script. Paola
Grandio’s riveting and sumptuous black-andwhite
lens work adroitly captures a community
frozen in time, and the jungle itself becomes
another character, both colluding with and bearing
silent witness to human frailty and strength. [-]

As the dreaded qualifying year begins, the
solitary and studious Eric is electrified when
the rebellious anarcho-punk Romain saunters
insouciantly across the schoolyard. Alienated
from and ashamed of his rural, working-class
origins, Eric becomes completely besotted with
the sickly Romain, his close relationship with
Anna (Béatrice Dalle, 37°2 le matin) and the new
wave/punk music that reflects their estrangement
and melancholy in the blackboard jungle. Despite
their differences, both Eric and Romain discover
their passion for amateur filmmaking, music
and poetry. However, a tragedy overtakes these
fetching young friends – but not without leaving
a life-affirming legacy.
In his sixth and most personal movie, Gäel
Morel (Le clan) tenderly examines the solace
of same-sex attraction and friendship across
class and social divides, both imagined and
real. Newcomers Valentin Ducommun and Victor
Chambon deliver intense performances and stars
Morel’s favourite muscle Thomas Dumerchez.
Eighties indie It girl Dalle is our direct link to this
period, while Camille Rocailleux’s inventive score
conjures the ambience of the decade. [-]

Patti Smith was born, wrote poetry, made
rock-and-roll history, and changed the world –
part of it anyway. When people ask her “How
does it feel to be a rock icon?” Patti Smith says
she “always thinks of Mount Rushmore.” Steven
Sebring’s directorial debut takes a lyrical, streamof-
consciousness approach that is exactly right
in his affecting portrait of the “rock-and-roll
Joan of Arc.” She can bring a crowd of devotees
to its feet chanting “Glor-i-a!” as effectively as
she can share her pain over the early death of
her husband, Fred Smith, her brother, her close
friend Robert Mapplethorpe, and other artists she
admires (Allen Ginsberg, Gregory Corso, William
S. Burroughs). Everyone knows that Patti Smith’s
music, poetry, and politics are fearless, funny,
raw, and original. But this film also captures
her physical presence – her gamine beauty and
charming, self-effacing style – that will take you
by surprise and leave you deeply moved. Less
a movie about a musician than a transfixing
meditation on her own iconography, Patti Smith:
Dream of Life is a just that, a dream. [-]

The Beirut Apt is a poetic documentary tribute
to Lebanon’s gay and lesbian citizens, who live
in a nation where homosexuality is not only
punishable in practice but also illegal to discuss
publicly. In May 2007, a collective of Italian
filmmakers headed to Beirut to journey into the
lives of Lebanese gays and lesbians, both Muslim
and Christian. In a country where the notorious
Article 534 is still used to harass and suppress
LGBT people, the filmmakers found an apartment
in the Rouche district where interviewees could
talk freely and openly about their lives. The
apartment becomes a confessional for them,
with the cityscape as a backdrop. Not only are we
privy to how they express their sexuality, but also
learn their views on the recent Hezbollah-Israeli
conflict and whether this volatile political situation
hindered or improved the situation for queer
people in Lebanon. At a time when Western media
conjure up stereotypes of Islam and the Middle
East, The Beirut Apt presents a complex, and
surprising portrait of a cosmopolitan Arab city. [-]

“We’re just a couple of guys who are parenting
and this is our story.” So says Lee Matthews
of the journey he and partner Tony Wood have
shared. They made headlines in Australia as
one of the first gay male couples to use both a
surrogate and an egg donor to create a baby.
They have had many supporters, and many vocal
critics. Five years later, the film looks at the
impact of the surrogacy process on the couple,
after they’ve had a second child with surrogate
Junoa. Lee and Tony found Junoa through an
American agency that caters almost exclusively
to gay couples. Junoa frankly explains why
she became a surrogate, and the emotional
challenges she has faced. Similarly, Lee and Tony
openly discuss gender and parenting, as they now
understand it. As the gayby boom spreads from
North America to the rest of the world, we can
expect more documentaries about the ups and
downs of queer parenthood, and we’d be lucky if
they were all as well-crafted as this one. [-]

Long-term and loving partners, Giulia (Cristina
Serafini) and Chiara (Irene Ivaldi) are preparing
to have a child. Given that Italian law restricts
access to artificial insemination to heterosexual
couples, Chiara and Giulia must undergo the
procedure in Holland. Chiara, however, discovers
an ominous lump in her breast – but resists
confiding in Giulia, fearful that her illness
may tarnish their candidacy for the artificial
insemination programme. As Chiara risks
destabilising their relationship, Giulia braces
herself for a confrontation with her mother about
her prejudices concerning same-sex families and
parenting.
Roberto Cuzzillo’s surprisingly assured debut
combines thoughtful framing with a warm palette
in this affecting and affectionate story of hope.
Relative newcomers Ivaldi and Serafini smooth
over an occasionally untidy script with arresting,
emotionally disciplined performances that
command our empathy. Supported by Cuzzillo’s
adroit use of silence and sound, No End is a
brilliant tale about the never-ending challenges
that life throws our way. [-]

A vibrant portrait of the (pop) Artist as a Young
Man. Christina Clausen chronicles the life and
art of Keith Haring, from his working-class
upbringing, development of a trademark approach
to art, and rise to pop art superstardom. Marrying
his signature sly symbolism to a single idea, “Art
is for Everybody!”, Haring’s distinctive brand
of urban primitivism earned many prestigious
commissions until his untimely death from
AIDS. Clausen reveals a compulsively generous
and gregarious spirit who fearlessly challenged
complacency, prejudice and stereotypes through
his art.
Angelo Talocci’s evocative 80s retro original
score drives this eye-popping visual feast, while
close friend Junior vasquez signs us in and out
with The Artist Speaks. Clausen crams archival
footage of Grace Jones, Madonna, paradise
Garage and Andy Warhol (among others) and
interviews with Haring himself, Jeffrey Artstar
Deitch, Fab 5 Freddy, Bill T. Jones, David
LaChapelle, Yoko Ono and Kenny Scharf in this
bouncy and breathless celebration of the late,
great Keith Haring. [-]

::DIRECTOR PRESENT::
Ambitious Andrew’s engagement to Asian
alpha-female Julie triggers a downward spiral
of hedonism and heroin for fellow-groupie Felix,
who continues to nurse his bruised longing for
her. Budding cub and court jester, Ben soothes
his self-hatred with secret hook-ups and sitcoms.
Meanwhile Julie’s brother, the pouty and
precious Tony finds himself rethinking both
career and life choices when he falls hard for
an HIV+ older man. Andrew, seduced by sexy
beast Louie’s charisma and crass materialism,
becomes the focus of their great expectations.
As money changes everything, a bachelor party
threatens an enduring camaraderie cultivated in
a liberal arts hothouse…
Chris Mason Johnson’s debut feature explores
the subtle tensions that exist in relationships
that appear to have transcended class, race
and sexual orientation. A soundtrack lush with
alterna-folk angst and indie pop introspection
accompanies this ensemble gem of thirtysomethings
in turmoil. A St. Elmo’s Fire for a
new generation, could forty actually be the
new thirty and thirty the new twenty? [-]
